Hey, I was wondering about applications. When is the best time to apply for Jan ? I applied for SSTG and didn't get a response after the allotted time, should I apply again ? I applied for alot of companies but none but one have responded yet, what is your advice ? Thank you.

    Re: Application

Your cutting it close the time is now or you could be talking about September 2012. Best thing to do is apply to everyone then see who makes you an offer.

      Re: Application

Follow up with phone calls, they may have a backload of applications they're sifting through and each company will have a slightly different system, so call them and find out when the best time to get it in is, and/or whether they're holding yours in a pile to look at later.

... Yeah... if you applied 3 years ago..... "Welcome to the merchant navy glad you can join us"
This year has had the largest increase... thus most applications than there ever has been.
Could start getting trickier... and the lower qualification in my opinion may soon vanish :/

Mmm .. well originally it was the devree sponsouship (i know its spelt wrong) then they brought it to the foundation degree to try and get more takers. still that didn't work... and i believe it was carnival ( well at the time P&O Princess) and maersk who sat down and looked at how they could increase the number of applicant cadets and actually fill the places.... there gave birth to the HND, designed by the company there fore recognised by the company.... 5 years or so later... now there are too many cadets for them to sift through .. haha

Thought it was a bit early for Jan 2012 applications - some companies only closed for Sept a couple of weeks ago.

Worried now - better start applying for Jan - was going to leave to August time, but sounds like I should be applying now?? just thought firms would be busy doing the admin for their sept intakes to be selecting/interviewing for Jan

I am also looking at starting in Jan. Haven't sent any applications off yet as SSTG said they wouldn't start looking at applications until August.

I was under the belief that the HND is the old skool course, which is now being phased out in favour of the HNC, which sounds like a watered down version of the HND. To get more cadets in the door the Foundation degree was brought in a few years back, (about a year before I started), in an attempt to woo people who would otherwise be looking at university. Both HND and FD are now fairly well subscribed to, and while the FD has yet to prove it's worth (people who did that route are only just starting to get into the workplace and think about going for their mates ticket, which the FD includes exemptions for on the written exams), the HND, which everyone working on ships now understands in terms of structure, content and what the cadet is supposed to do, is being chucked in favor of something else that they will have no idea about. Both the new HNC and FD courses are structured so that the phases are longer than they were on the HND, and are frankly, a dubious future for the standards of learning in the MN. As far as I know, none of the courses were created in conjunction with any shipping companies, although I'd be very interested to hear evidence that they were.

                      Re: Application

                      Size4 is correct.

There was a time before HND, but at least since the beginning of this millenium the HND route was standard, based on a 7 phase cadetship. Failure of higher elements of the HND (Phase 5) could result in the award of an HNC in lieu. The HND was coupled with a VQ/SVQ in Merchant Vessel Operations which I understand has now given way to a non-VQ task book.

There were various BSc degree options in the first half of the decade, but they were rare.

All this FD and PD stuff is quite new, having arisen in the last few years.

The opening up of an HNC route is somewhat degrading the cadetship.

                        Re: Application

See's as though I may have got some of my information wrong then... or the wrong way round aha.

This was from a senior officer 2nd or 1st with the added "senior" to their tittle when I was on the Oceana ( P&O cruise vessel) also along with either the 1st or 2nd engineer, plus the cheif engineer (though he was a little tipsy addmitedly), I know they were telling my route in with the qualifications both naming a bach or something degree and a foundation degree and also the HND... This was 3 years ago though... I must appologise if I have got my information mixed up... Most admiting, I only remember the half an hour conversation vividly as it was soo long ago.... I think I may have presumed now from the HND being new and though it was that way round. I do however remmber them saying about the company a while back and maersk..(actually also another company though I can not remember it) who sat down about an "increase of cadet applicants" and came up with new programes to try and solve the solution (I presumed that was the HND).... that is how I first heard of maersk offering cadetships and is who I am with now.

Sorry If I have confused anyone.... though I'm rather confused myself now as well.

Ahhh, a half hour conversation three years ago in a bar, possibly not the most reliable source of up to date info!

It's the HNC that's new, don't get em mixed up! (I mean, HND, HNC, they're so OBVIOUSLY utterly different...... )
