What?? Sorry i think you've misunderstood me i meant how long will you be on the ships for. Theres no way your on the ships for 9 months and 11 months during training thats far to long... I've already been told my first sea phase will start in march/april so you're wrong straight away unless you mean something else?

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
The confusion is calling them sea phases.....they arent, they are trips and they happen during the sea phase...so the actual question you where aiming at........(as far as I can tell)
What are the typical trip lengths during the sea phases of my study time?
And aprox 3-4 months at a time depending on company and route you are on, though there are reports of people doing 6 month trips all in a one-erTrust me I'm a Chief.
Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
Though it really depends on the company, and how they operate, most companies will try and give you a larger trip to leave ratio than they might give a qualified officer to ensure you get as much sea time as possible, as not having your 6/12 months when you come into your final college phase causes all kinds of problems for the remianing short courses orals and everything else.
Being with a container company I'd imagine you'll do a 3-4 month trip, with a month or so off, or you could do a 3 month trip, 3 weeks off, then be on a boat until you're due back in college, with it not being unheard of to be a bit late getting back to the college with trips over running.
I also think the problem with the first answer, is I assume you're doing engineering which has a different sea phase to Deckies

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
I'm starting an Engine cadetship with Boston Putford (offshore), which primarily do 2 weeks or 28day rotations at sea....does anybody know how this would work with regards to sea time during the sea phases?
Would it simply be a case of staying on one of there boats for 3 months whilst the crews change round? Or doing lots of shorter trips?Luck......Preperation times Opportunity.

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
You get around 6 months per sea phase to gain sea-time in, if your with north star or a similar company who does fixed crew changes then its up to them, if your on deep sea or something then it depends on your company, the minimum would be 3 months sea time per seaphase for engineers, Its best to get more than the minimum though, the same as you would with anything. Speak to your sponsoring company about it though, I managed to get an extra month in before I went back to collegeLife at sea is a life for me

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
1. Deck or Engine?
2. FD or HND?
3. Deep Sea or Coastal
4. Motor Ticket or Combined Steam & Motor
It varies according to these... e.g.:
1. Deckies spend twice as long at sea as Clankies
2. Dates vary by course type
3. Trip lengths vary by vessel type
4. For Engineers, Motor ticket requires a minimum of 6 months; Combined requires a minimum 8 months
(correct me if I'm wrong)

Re: how long is sea phases at college?
Dawgs right, it varies depending on all those factors. as an HND Engineer I left college toward the start of april for my first sea phase, and won't go back to college unitl mid-late september. But my actual trip to sea starts in a week and Ill get back in the first week of september, so just short of 4 months.
HND Deckies left at Christmas, FD Deckies left about a month later. FD Engineers left about 2-3 weeks before us. And I THINK that everyone comes back around the same time.
