I keep seeing jobs advertised in Fisheries protection. The Uk seems to spend alot of money on this, Scotland alone has 4 vessels not to mention aircraft. So how much illegal fishing goes on? Has anyone ever worked in this sector?

Re: Fisheries protection a silly question
****loads: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-n ... d-11098124 for a start.
There are all kinds of complex rules on fishing: how much, where, when, what kind of equipment, etc. and the SFPA and the RN Fisheries Protection Squadron are part of enforcing it, and the EU Common Fisheries Policy, and...
Lots of ex-fishermen in the merchant navy but not sure if there are any on here. When I was at college, up to a quarter of the class of cadets might have had fishing experience or background. I did hear that SFPA was difficult to get a permanent position with, and they give preference to those with previous government maritime experience. Are the posts advertised permanent ones?

Re: Fisheries protection a silly question
With long-line fishing, sea birds can get caught when they try eat off the line. So apparently there's a job for someone to tag along and count how many birds are caught on the line, and then order the fishermen to stop and go back when it hits X number. Sometimes fishermen would shake the line to try to remove some birds so that they wouldn't reach the limit. It might be the kind of job where you'd be offered bribes and get threatened often.
