  • Is it for me?

    Hi there,
I'm very much interested in joining the MN, in particular taking up an ocean cruise deck cadetship. My Grandfather and great Grandfather were both merchant navy members and the ocean really is in my blood but the thing is I've never really had a lot of time on the sea but the few times I have (been sailing with the RN back when a family member was serving on the Invincible, or on tourist vessels) it has been incredibly exciting and almost connecting with something. It's just I've never really been away from home for too long, but figured if i didn't take the cadetship I would be going to university anyway? I guess thats just a personal thing I need to get over.

So at GCSE i got 4 A's and 2 B's but a C in maths and am currently doing A levels with once science (I did however get a D in my unit 1 exam), i think that I could demonstrate my commitment and passion quite well. Do you guys think this is enough to make me a possible candidate? Is it worth getting some sort of outside experience?

let me know what you guys think

I think the only thing holding you back is yourself. Are you seeking validation for your choice? Your grades are already high enough to do the HND course, or if you finish your AS levels, you can go for the FD. But please don't make it out to be a spiritual thing, "...and almost connecting with something...". It's not spiritual, it's a job. But it's a good job. So you've never been away from home for long? Well cut the umbilical cord and get out there.

Lets try not to be too harsh on the newbie / wannabe cadets eh?

Like Lloyd said, you have the grades, so if you want to go for it, then go for it, but I would advise you not to get all your hopes set on a cruise company as they are one of the hardest ones to get into (and not the best paying ones either).

The worst thing you can do is not go for it. If you go for it, get it, and love it then all's great. If you don't like it, at least you tried it and found that out for yourself rather than relying on third hand information, and if you don't get it, at least you tried and can try again when better armed with more experience if you so want. The ONLY things we regret in life are the things we didn't try. Go for it.
