Re: What is the Carnival and Princess pay like?
Ok 18k is wayyyyy lower than what i got as 4th with carnival!
The 4th pay per 30 days worked is 2754 and as 3rd it is 3100 approx. With the manning issues in the company and the 3 on 1.5 off ratio you will be expected to work around 9 months a year. this is about 28000 (not getting my calculator out). The jump from 3rd to 2nd is the biggest rise you get and 4400 is the month worked way for that.
Personally although you spend more time away the work is a LOT more relaxing onboard due to watchkeeping. Plus it was mentioned above....theres girls!

Can a limited ticket be upgrade at a later date? If so how dificult would it be? Would you need to take a job at a lower rank etc

I've pondered this a few times, and have decided to stick with commercial shipping until I get my unlimited class 2, then find a lucrative yacht position for 2-3 years to pay off the mortgage and lay down some pension. Unless it's a big superyacht(they do exist, but are the exception to the rule), you may end up with a limited ticket, which could reduce your job prospects if you ever want to go back to commercial shipping.

Re: What is the Carnival and Princess pay like?
jesus 60k on yachts?? Thats much better than cargo vessels which i will be going on. Ive seen my wage scale as my neighbour is in the company im applying for as crew manager, and 3/0 starts at 22k 2/0 is like 25-30k and cant remember cheif mate but captain is something like 60k which is the same as what you said about yachts as a 3/0... and thats on a permanent wage scale so 4 on 2 off. Wow im going to try getting into yachts as soon as i finished my 3 years at the company im applying for.

There is money to be made in the yachting sector, but remember that it is highly sort after and is a rather small area of this industry (not that many superyachts knocking about with full time crews).
Also, if you go on yachts for most of your career, it makes it really difficult to go back to larger vessels as most companies would rather take someone who has spent their career on larger vessels.

Everyone seemed to skip by "Offshore"... what does "Offshore" mean? Oil & Gas?
Same sort of money as Superyachts?
I guess the food might be better on a Superyacht, but the leave and support might not be? Any thoughts?

Re: What is the Carnival and Princess pay like?
Very variable. On the deck side, the guys offshore with DP tickets are on excellent salaries and 1:1 leave ratio, but yes very little else in terms of benefits.
After years of commercial, eventually sailing as 2/O on Cruise Ships, I moved into the yachting sector, and started on 2 months on / 1 month off, with 60k as a 3rd Officer plus bonus, business flights and medical.
The yacht industry is still widely misunderstood from the outside, but essentially whilst it may look like a yacht, these 160m/10,000gt yachts are essentially Class 1 Commercial Vessels (or in the case of the smaller ones Class 12 cargo ships), with all the same requirements that go with them such as ISM, Safety Equipment etc etc. For a deck officer or engineer's perspective it really isn't that different from any other ship, as you still do exactly the same job. To be honest, I've been offshore, been on cruise ships and now in yachts and it's all the same, just a different name!
chiefy edit, changed poster as I thinkit's a fair assumption this is from AM

Re: What is the Carnival and Princess pay like?
Really? Hmmmmm sounds mighty interesting, BUT what are the rest of the conditions like? Leave, travel, insurance, health insurance etc?
90k pa but little leave (which I have heard of) isnt going to sit well with Mrs Chiefy!
Those numbers sound good, but remember to look at the whole package not just the headline pay rate, mind you if I was young and daft (as opposed to just daft) I would have proper look into that sector, however they dont take cadets (that I've seen) so you still need to do the Cadet thing with "a n other shipping co ltd"

Well to be honest, you'll start on 18k ish as a 4th Eng, and then maybe after a few years make your way upto 3rd or 2nd eng on circa 30k. Thats still pretty low.
Money is in the Offshore or Yachting sectors, 60k, 70k, 80k, 90k+++++ for officers is what those in the know work for.
