  • Thomson Cruises

Hello, I have been accepted by SSTG with Thomson cruises sponsoring me and will be studying in Glasgow. Just sent my medical form away for SSTG to accept it.
Just wanted to know what happens after they get the copy of it and if there is anyone else with TUI on this? and if it is a good sponsoring company? I was always interested in cruises and so this is why I picked TUI, and I realise its a bit late to ask this but was it a good choice? I'll be happy with it, whatever anyone says just interested to know more about it from people with experience

I have heard that cadets with this company don't go on cruise ships, and are instead placed with other companies on PSVs and dredgers etc.

after you send your medical, i think you wait for your paperwork, which will take time.

SSTG put you on PSV's and Dredgers if that is your choice! They're not like Clyde who allocate places with a rudimentary tombola!

Get in touch with your training officer (they should have contacted you by now) and see what they have to say about the medical. I'm with SSTG and I got told that I would be refunded when I commence training in September but it could be different between each of the SSTG member companies.

            Re: Thomson Cruises

Some companies will pay up front are arrange it for you (most do), otherwise you will be refunded very promptly by SSTG. I wouldn't panic about it-they will sort everything out for you. There were even some cadets who started college without an ENG1 and instead got it done in their first phase.
I wouldn't personally get too worried about bothering the training manager too much as there is checklist that they work through and there is plenty of time before college....even though I'm sure it doesn't feel like it!
In short, sit back and enjoy being taken care of-that's what they do...and they do it pretty well!

              Re: Thomson Cruises

You get refunded for your ENG1 medical after you send a receipt of for it to the company, don't get in a hassle about documents and such, it's all done in good time, I didn't sign my sponsor contract until a month before I started phase 2

I'm talking about thompson cruises, cadets don't get put on their cruise ships, they instead get placed on other ships by sstg. I know a phase 2 guy who studies HND at warsash and he told me he was warned about this by his training manager.

                          Re: Thomson Cruises

There actually TUI which have Thompson Cruises, This may be why you havent heard of them. I am a deck cadet waiting to start in september. With regard to not being on Thompson cruises this is true that your whole sea time might not be spent with Thompson but a variety of diffferent vessels, which is great as you get to try a variety. I personally think this is good thing as you can see what type of vessels you like and would prefer to work on once qualified. I also have a friend who is just about to qualify and has spent their whole sea time on cruise ships being sponsored by TUI.

                            Thanks for replying
I know I get the money back for the medical, and they have contacted me but the damn medical wouldnt send. Think I've managed it now, just need to wait on the reply and details
I don't mind where I'm placed, as long as I can get the job at the other end and I like it lol.
It's Engineering officer I am going for, not deck hand

                              LOL.

If your're starting in September you should hopefully have enough time to find out the name of the company you're really working for
