  • RMR and cadetship

Just wondering whether it would be possible to join the royal marine reserve and go through a cadetship. Also if anyone knows of any cadets who have joined the RMR or RNR it would be nice to share their views.

Shouldn't be as long as you can find time to meet the comitments to your unit. I am in the TA think it was a bit of a plus at the interview might be worth joining before you start applying for cadetships.

I already have a cadetship as such I was just wondering whether it would be possible to join when I go back to college. I am interested in the TA as well so that's good to hear. Thanks for the reply.

MN officers are one of the few categories who can join the RNR as an officer. Won't count for RMR though.

I trained with London RMR's holding troop for 3 months about 18 months ago and knowing the time commitment required during phase 1 and 2 should you pass selection, I think you might struggle. There was only one selection a year back then (might have changed now although with the planned Naval cutbacks I would be surprised) so should your sea phase occur over January you wouldn't even be around to attend the selection weekend! (again, this was the London detachment so it may differ for other regions).

Should you pass selection you need to give up one weekend every month and at the end of Phase 1 is a two week course down at CTCRM, so again finding a spare 2 weeks during your cadetship might be tricky - your sponsor may also not be too keen on you taking a 2 week stint off when they are paying you to be at college.

Having said all this, you don't get if you don't ask. Go down to your local AFCO speak to them. Please do let me know what happens as it is something I had been pondering giving another crack so would be very interested to hear.

          Good luck!

The RNR will welcome you, but in reality, you will need to have reliable transport (i.e.: a car).
You'll probably be only able to fulfil the camping out commitment in the late summer.
You might find the traipsing off to see Akela every other week tricky at times, due to sudden coursework deadlines and exam prep.
The nearest to South Shields is Calliope; the nearest to Warsash is Portsmouth; the nearest to Glasgow is in Greenock, and Fleetwood? probably a bit too far away. I've planned to see if I can do it, but we'll see...
