  • Best companies for ETO cadets

What companies do people think are the best to train as an ETO?

I know most of the cruise boys train up elecs, the main other choice seems to be with someone like Global Marine Systems through SSTG.

As the cruise lines are big employers of ETOs is it best to get a foot in the door with them i.e chance to rise up to Chief Electrician which doesn't seem to be on offer with ships with one or two ETOs on board OR is it best to try and get into the ROV/DP electrical niche?

    *confused*

dont quote me on it but some of the north sea vessels run on diesel electric engines, if your stuck down to choosing between deep sea and that for example, try north star as theres a lot more electrical, especially on the modernised vessels.

Depends what you mean by "best"!

Is it really that you want to work with ROVs in future? In what capacity?

It sounds like you want to do an ETO cadetship at STC.
As you say, for the ETO cadetship or fast-track (if you've got a HND or more in electrical, rather than electronic, engineering), Carnival is probably the best bet.
There have been reports of companies like BP, Bibby, Chiltern & Trinity House (through Viking); Acergy and ADNATCO (through CMT?), taking them. As you say, GMS through SSTG (and possibly others?).

RFA SE is a little different, in that it's a direct entry thing really (4 month course on full pay), and you have to do the AIB (and get over 180/300 I think), assuming you get through the "fireside chat" (which is more like an oral exam).
