  • Offers of sponsorship

Say you have been offered sponsorship by a company and you have accepted it. Now say another company comes along and offers you sponsorship, can you accept the second offer instead of the first offer, even though you have accepted the first one? As in, accept the second offer, and decline the first offer even though you have already accepted it?

Depends if you have signed any contract as yet. You may have accepted the offer but if you have not signed the sponsorship agreement/contract then you are not actually tied to them.

If you have then potentially there could be comeback against you ( they may ask for a sum of money ). Given that you have not started your training it is not likely this would happen. All depends on the actual wording of the agreement.

I'm sorry Chris but why have do you have to put down this 'certain Scottish agency'? I think we all know who you mean and I have to say personally I have had no problems with them nor have any of my classmates. Yes they are an 'agency' as such, yes they work on profit, yes this is the fundamental principle of most companies in a capitalist society (unless they are funded like a certain southern company). However, this 'Scottish agency', from personal experience, have treated me well, fulfilled all their duties as a training company, been most helpful in any queries I've had and set me up with a good sponsor company for which I am very grateful.

It smacks of a lack of respect for the whole industry if you speak about any bonafide merchant navy training company like that.

Sorry RNR, just my opinion, and somehow the double quote feature has miquoted me.

I wouldn't feel that bad considering the way the allocate cadets to sponsors, but obviously some people are quite happy with that.

However, there are some parts of the industry that I find hard to respect.

All good points and the only response I have for those is "welcome to the world of the modern seafarer!"

This is your opinion and your totally right to have one. It's just sometimes nice to get a balance between the differing view points. What people sometimes forget is they are the biggest recruiter for the MN in the UK and, thus, are bound to have a higher amount of people who have issues due to the large amount of cadets under thier wing. However, I believe its right to treat all MN companies with respect because they are offering a chance to live a very different lifestyle than the normal 9 to 5 most people work, a rare thing these days.

Regarding allocation of sponsors, it is a suspense builder not knowing who you are with until you start college but I am perfectly happy with who I am being sponsored by as they were one of my choices and are a very decent company. I am not sure why cadets get told so late and if I was in a different position (with a company I didn't want), I may of had a different stance on this issue.
