  • Missing Home?

    As the title says....

When at sea for 4 months at a time do you miss home?

And is there anything you do to stop you missing home and make it a little easier?

    Re: Missing Home?

Yes, miss home but normally not all the time, just in quite times or if things are particularly stressfull. However it comes and goes, birthdays and holidyas (Christmas etc) can be a time of missing home too.

Depending who you are with and ships facilities dealing with it can be achived in various ways, if you have internet then you have full access to home, wiht MSN and Skype and being able to read about your favorite team on BBC or thier own web site etc. You'll still have your e-mail and so you'll just not be at home. Otherships will have e-mail of some sort so you can keep in touch, then there is phones of various types, Irridium is cheaper than full SatPhone but quality can be a bit hit and miss, SatPhone is expensive and not generally used for calls home.

Runs ashore may give access to internet from Seamans Missions or cafe /Bars etc so that's good too, but it depends upon your ship type and run.

Take photos of you nearest and dearest and put them up or use as a screen saver etc.

And remember you're there to work and learn so with luck most of the time you'll be too busy to get too home sick Failing that talk to people, go and mix with the other bods on board..distract yourself

It can be hard, but you'll soon know whether you can cope with it as a life style or not.

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

        Re: Missing Home?

        Yup
        Mission to Seamen
        Apostolate of the Sea
        Stella Marris
        Danish Seamans Clib

All much of a muchness, charities that run service for seafarers in port, In South Shields they are currently homeless after a major issue with thier building, but are down near the cinema / Customs House area.

We might not use them much while here, BUT they are a god send when away, often run buses to / from the terminal to thier place, have cheap phones home and internet access. Well worth supporting

And should you need it there is usually a "reverend" of some flavour knocking about the place

On a similar note. What did you miss from home that you'd never think to bring with you or never thought you'd miss?

If you're still within Europe you can normally pick up Irn Bru in most of the big Carrefour's (in their international aisles) - also the 'Seamans' place in Civitavecchia also stocks it :-)

You will always forget something each time you go to sea - regardless of how well you pack :-) I don't normally miss any particular item, you will get homesick from time to time when you're having a **** day - but as others have said the easiest way to get past that is to socialise and keep busy - if you hide away in your cabin you will really suffer!

I have taken to learning Spanish in my free time to keep me occupied when there is nothing going on onboard.

I used to work with a lot of Brazilian crew / staff and of course lovely Brazilian passengers.... but alas Portuguese is only spoken in a few countries so while I know basic Portuguese it's not going to be very useful to me in the future... However it is similar in many ways to Spanish hence why I have chosen that.

Spanish however is probably the second most spoken language behind English (certainly in the areas the ships I have been on trade) and I like the language.
