Re: promotion
Hi, you will sit exams to hold the certification for certain levels of your licence as below;
Engineers: EOOW - 2nd Engineer - Chief Engineer
Deck: OOW - Chief Officer - Master
However, just because you hold a certificate for a particular level will not mean you are employed by a company at that level, some companies require you to hold a certificate for the level above which you are currently employed.
Similarly, you could well find yourself holding a chief engineers licence and joining a ship as a 3rd engineer (or masters and joining as a 2nd / 3rd officer) it all depends on what positions are available within your company.
For further information see (these are for Warsash courses and they may differ slightly from other colleges);

- Engineer Cadets - HND(2009+)[/*:3h6zhk1b]
- Deck Cadets - FdDg[/*:3h6zhk1b]
?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?
