    Re: deck or engineer?

    Guys, Guys, Guys
    Never mind the deck/engine hulabaloo.
    What is important is - "Think Ship".
    Deck is as technical as engine, in many many types of vessel. More so in some.
    To you from failing hands we throw - The Torch;
    Be yours to hold it high.
    If ye break faith with us of old,
    We shall not sleep,
    nor shall you either !!!

        DP ships; they have more buttons/dials/big flashing red lights(TM) on the bridge than in the ECR.

          Re: deck or engineer?

          Ive chatted with friends and lecturers since getting to college, and the (on the HND) the Engineers study deeper maths and stability than Deck do. And then the other subjects are completely different as they are career specific. I wasnt amazing at maths when I started, but I'm coping pretty well, so don't let the academics put you off. Choose what you think you'd prefer to do 8 hours a day for 4-6 months at a time. would you get bored staring out a window?

            Maths you are taught in school is not career specific so you may find you get on better with maths at college when it's applied to something you're working on. Navigation or Engineering

              Re: deck or engineer?

              At the end of the day both sides are just as important as each other. Im sure us Engineers could steer a ship, but would we be able to sail about without a GPS? Probably not. Same goes for the deck side, could they come down and start up the main engine. Nope.

              So both sides really need each other, although some deck cadets i've met seem to think they run the entire ship...
              I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....
