  • Smoking @ College

    Hi all,

Just a quick question. There are already posts about smoking when on ship but no mention of smoking in college. With the UK smoking ban I just would like to clarify when staying @ halls are you allowed to smoke in your own room or do you have to go outside to smoke in a bus stop esque building or some far corner away from any form of building on site.

    Thanks.

      Re: Smoking @ College

As with any other institution, premises or workplace, smoking is banned in all buildings. Therefore you get the aforementioned bus stop...

      However, as Steamer says.....

Disclaimer: I never did that, I is a good girl. Pwomise.

For the south tyneside halls, your aloud to smoke in your room providing there are no other non-smokers with you. and you can smoke on the grounds, common rooms is not aloud but nobody really gives a rats were you smoke in the whole place really!

All rooms at Warsash are non smoking and smoking is only allowed 5m away from buildings and in designated shelters...

Of course that's all bollocks which tends to be ignored! it's a common sense approach in reality

Same at Glasgow. They have "smoking rooms", but they view it as your home and leave you alone.

I concur with Brimbo regarding South Tyneside, I got the joining instructions through the other day and it says you are allowed to smoke in your room. But if cleaners etc are due your room has to be well ventilated before they arrive and you are not allowed to smoke in thier presense, obviously.

Wow, that's far more relaxed than at Fleetwood, where they have also made toasters in rooms verboten as they have a tendancy to set fire alarms off, apparently. The only fire alarms I've ever noticed have always been due to the kitchen burning the bacon.

Can also tell you smoking in rooms at STC is fine , as is anywhere really so relaxed.
People smoke in the toilet , Common room , security are good guys so there usually ok about it .
                      Maybe I will never be

@ Beef1992 - What is the actual practice regarding guests staying overnight in your room at South Tyneside if it is quite relaxed? As in the joining instructions it says guests have to leave by something like 10pm. However, I know in real terms these guidelines are not always enforced in halls.

                          Re: Smoking @ College

Neil - Official policy is no smoking in any college building, there are a couple of sheltered spots in the courtyard where everyone smokes.

The college tells you that if you smoke in your room (or use a toaster) you will set off the fire alarm, and they are fairly strict about the no toaster rule. However, experience tells me that the smoke alarms are not so sensitive as they would have you think; leave your window open and dispose of butts thoughtfully. Best not to leave a full ashtray out for the cleaners!

                            Thanks.

Suppose I will be good for the 1st few days and then I will slip into breaking the rules and smoke in my room. I don't suppose in the summer outdoor smoking will be a problem and considering it's a small room I don't want a room that smells like an ashtray. Best pack a few febreeze plug-ins.

In STC college your aloud same gender guests to come but they have to be out for 2200 strictly, Needless to say everyone there has attempted numerous ways to open the locked windows and doors leading to the outside world the halls is well and truely full proof. If you want a female companion best making friends with any female cadets present there!
Though if your caught breaking any of these rules youll be more than often given a final warning as these are the most strictly upkept rules i know of.
