  • ENG1 and Drugs

    Hi there,

I am looking at joining the merchant navy, but have been told that there is a medical test called the ENG1, I am guessing they do a drugs test? What drugs would be shown up on this?

I didn't get drugs tested in my ENG1. They test you for every kind of drug I think throughout your training at college. You have to declare any medication you have taken, even chewing gum too...someone in my old class got kicked out in the second week of starting because he failed his drugs/alcohol test.

All of em: if you dabble, stop now (especially smoking da 'erb, it takes up to 3 months to clear out of your system)

The ENG1 does not necessarily involve a drugs test but many companies will request one anyway. Plus you will be subject to random drug testing throughout your career and college.

Doubt they'd be an issue, but just make sure you declare everything. I had to tell them about a lemsip I drank like...12 days before my random drugs test...

Assuming you mean perscription seteroids, then not an issue, declare them by their generic (chemical) name as they often wont recognise "brand" names, though taking steroids on perscription might cause issues with the ENG1 depending why you have been given them, again declare it to the Doctor doing the medical.

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Personal feelings aside, stop taking them... They're not good for you and if you want a career in the MN they'll ruin it.

Speak to your GP about what you've been taking, ask him his opinion and for the facts. Tell him you want to stop and he should be able to help you with advice and support

Definitely this; don't go cold turkey with steroids as it can do bad stuff to you(Addison's Disease). I was on them for medical reasons and it took 3 months to go from 40mg per day to stopping.

If non perscription then, yes it's an issue, as any non-perscription or recreational chemicals are. Not least how on earth do you plan to take them while at sea? All ships require you tell the medical officer if you are taking anything prescribed, not least so if there is an accident or issue they know what to treat you with and what meds can play nicely together in your body, add to this issues with any customs officials and declarations, and you are in a world of hurt.

Seek profesional help to stop taking them, just stopping, as already mentioned is not a good thing either, needs proper contorl and monitoring.

Otherwise good luck with your application

Most companies will insist on a drugs test within a fortnight of joining college. It was that way with us and I do remember a few lads being thrown out over it.

You come across as such a not very nice person on these forums.

You clearly know little about the properties of anabolic steroids or how they affect people so why feel the need to make a stab-in-the-dark comment?

To the OP - Most steroids (not all) wont be tested for by any sponsoring company. I personally know 2 people in the MN who have done various cycles, dianabol to test, tren, nap's aswell as HGH and its never caused them a problem with regards to their careers.

The biggest problem they face is getting the nutrition and training they need in order to get the best out of the gear, not many ships will allow you to eat 'well', from a bodybuilding perspective.

That all said.... I do agree with the rest who say you should wrap it up for now, come off, do an adequate PCT and get yourself a job, without having to worry about drugs hindering your efforts. Maybe once you're in you will have an opportunity to re-evaluate the position and decide if you want to use again when you know exactly the lifestlye you will have when working in the merchant navy.

It was hardly a "stab-in-the-dark comment as:

Androgenic effects of the steroids promote anger and aggression.
Anabolic effects promote cell growth and protein synthesis.
Testicular atrophy is caused from the inhibition of natural testosterone which results in (temporary) infertility due to extremely low sperm production. The low sperm production (sperm accounts for 85% of testicular volume) causes the excessive shrinkage.

And as for me being a member of the "Cambridge University Netball Team"... i'd merely say that you're not exactly endearing after your little "pro-roids" rant are ya?

Far from 'pro-roids' i'm afraid, i've simply read up on the subject i discuss, that and having been in daily contact with guys who have used, I am well aware of how they work and the side effects they give. I also understand that using steroids is a lifestly choice, not just a case of jabbing a needle in your arse and waking up the next day like the honey monster - nor to they make you wake up with the mindset of Rauol Moat.

If i came on here and started mouthing off about all merchant navy officers being rapists and alcoholics i would expect someone to point out that this is not the case and tell me to do some solid research on MN officers before making such remarks that are blatently not true in all cases.
