    Trust me I'm a Chief.

Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Not even that, just a shortage of 'cheap' officers.

Yes I think so there have been other UK reports before and those cited lots of retiring senior officers. If you look at the jobs advertised with different recruiters that's where the vacancies seem to be, Chiefs and masters mainly. Or cooks always seem to be jobs for cooks!

Also I think there is concern a few years down the track for experienced deck offices to come ashore for various shipping jobs

I don't know what the rule are nowadays but in my time a ship couldn't sail unless a cook and a radio officer were signed on articles in their own rank.

The deckies and clankies could be signed on as anything as long as they had the right tickets

Another piece of ancient marine trivia

Yup, they will be short of people who will work on ITF wages at best, which is still **** all. You could only live of ITF wages if you lived in a corrugated iron house an were happy to die before the age of 40. Most cheap employers don't even pay ITF as there is zero obligation to do so.
