    It's only appropriate.

I see that the submersible is yellow so Boaty is a yellow submarine

I wouldn't like to be going into foreign ports and trying to give the name in phonetics.
looks like one of the vessel's submersible craft is to be named 'Boaty' as a tongue-in-cheek reminder. A good point about the phonetics but I'm a little upset that I'll never know the experience of following her into a reporting area and hearing 'that' name coming over the VHF!

Same, the tounge-in-cheek justification at Admiral Blas "Made a significant contribution to British undersea reasearch" made me chuckle. I fail to see how the suggestion can be seen as offensive when the events surrounding it took place 275 years ago.

Does it really matter what they actually call it eventually? It's forever going to be know as RRS Boaty McBoatface.

I think the best name was some woman who had just suggested her own name. but they will know exactly who it is going to be named after already, the whole vote and suggest is just to get some more exposure.
even if the wanted name gets relatively little % of the vote they will say that the 'reason' behind the suggestion is the best and most fitting. Still its done what is needed, lots of publicity, every suggested name and vote will be seen as a person who supports the project.

also given that it had something like 18000 votes in a day I would guess that someone has written a script to keep voting the one name

The website is having 'technical problems'. I suspect they're terrified that even more people are going to vote for Boaty McBoatface
