  • Earthquake makes new island

    Anyone else seen this?

    Visitors to an island that emerged from the sea off Pakistan during an earthquake on Tuesday say it emits flammable gases.

        Fascinating! Presume charts get updated when this happens?

          Do they have any of these in Pakistan, or is it a UK thing?

            A NAVAREA warning will be issued within a day or two, followed by a Temp & Preliminary notice after a week or two... Eventually a chart correction will be issued sometime after a few weeks (or months depending on area - years in the case of some places)

            I think I upset CD when he had to do a load of corrections for Sokhna port when I reported the harbour had changed :-) that took about 2 months to filter through the process.

              It's pretty much a UK thing - although it is in the IALA standards. And an island wouldn't be marked by one :-)

                Ta. I wasn't sure if it was exclusively new wrecks, or covered most new hazards to shipping

                  The clue is in the name :-) new dangers are marked by double cardinals usually if deemed hazardous enough - although it's an island so it's not like you can't see it :-)

                    yeah I had an app that called it a 'new danger marker'. Double Cardinals being one on either side, or some kind of uber cardinal that we haven't covered yet?

                      Unless your using a tracing / commercial service, you receive this weekly, which contains corrections to be made to paper charts, the chart catalogue and the various pilot books;

                        Thank you Alastairuk for that. Its not the sort of thing that I'm likely to come across in my little yacht, islands popping up, well hopefully not. Must make you look twice when it does though.
                        What was interesting too was that they can go back down again. You have to presume I suppose that there could be others forming below the surface, that no one has seen until they hit them that is. Quite a hazard!

                          We were very close to having a new island here in the Canaries recently when an underwater volcano near to the island of El Hierro erupted, sadly / thankfully (depending on how you look at it) it stopped around 30m short of the surface.
                          Go out, do stuff

                            Wasn't there some kind of research/warning a few years back about if a chunk of the Canaries fell into the sea it would cause a huge tidal wave? Think it was the Canaries, or was it somewhere else?

                              It was in a book by Patrick Robinson. Terrorists use a Submarine to knock off a chunk of the canaries to drown our the US Eastern Seaboard.....
