  • Officercadet Seagoing Salary Survey - 2013

I thought it might be useful for a salary survey to be conducted so that we can get an idea of what sort of conditions and salaries are available. It doesn't ask for any personal details to identify you. All results will be freely available on the website.

If a moderator could please make it a sticky, that would be great.

Any recommendations or advice for the survey would be welcomed.

In the space of ten minutes, we already have ten submissions. The more people who post, regardless of rank or nationality, the better information we have to guide people on here.

Good idea and it will be interesting to see the results. Although salary is not the only concern I have when applying for a job, it is an important one and sometimes difficult to find out.

Yes, I find it really annoying applying for jobs without knowing the salary. But it just seems to be the nature of the industry

that's my bug bear too about job adverts where it says salary competitive or excellent or similar. Why not just put a number?
Young mariner I think your survey could include details of training for further tickets as the difference companies provide in this area seems to be huge.

Thank you to everyone completing the survey so far. 60% of those taking part are cadets, lots of diverse ship types and some good comments on how to improve the survey.

I hope that a lot more people can complete the survey, results in a months time.

I'll add some FB posts and tweets to the social media schedule for later in the week to try and get you a few more responses.

Thanks, that would be very much appreciated! The responses are really diverse and interesting so far and I think once its published will give everyone a better idea of what salaries, conditions and rotation are available in the industry whether as a cadet or an officer. What surprises me is that some of the cadet salaries are still quite similar to what I was earning as a cadet, in fact I'll go and dig out an old salary statement.

So, I've got my old allowance statements from when I was cadet. When I started my cadetship it was managed by a company called Precious Associates who later became part of Clyde Marine Recruitment who I finished my cadetship with.

When I started in 2003, my first allowance was ?531.43. When I finished my cadetship in early 2006, my monthly allowance was either ?616 or ?770 a month depending on whether it was a 4 or 5 week month (weekly rate ?154).

Inflation in the last 10 years has been roughly 25.7% , yet some companies seem to still be paying fairly similar allowances despite increased costs of living.

As I said, it will be interesting when the final results are published.

Clyde now is ?120 a week (sea) or ?175 a week (college). In three years (financial) I've been with then not even a small rise to match inflation. But with the demand for cadetships being what it is they have no reason to pay more.

I am fairly sure that the piece of paper I got given when I started with SSTG in 2010 with the list of what you would be getting paid in different phases had a line at the top that said something along the lines of "Training Allowance 2006". So obviously they hadn't changed between 2006-2010 to match inflation and didn't change during my cadetship either. Indeed I believe they have actually been cut significantly as of this year since they no longer pay accommodation. But as has already been mentioned, I guess if the demand stays the way it is there is no incentive for companies to pay any more than they need to. Obviously there are issues with government funding cuts as well.
