It's registered at a Virtual Office address, uses a mobile phone number for its main contact and doesn't appear to be a government registered tax advisor. Various spelling mistakes throughout the website, and no actual names or contact information for any employees.

Would I hand over ?195 to this company? No.

Grammar all over the place, odd office address, mobile phone number for a contact telephone, only been in business since the 29th June, not registered with the FSA, dodgy enrollment form, etc, etc

I'm with A/M on this, I wouldn't hand money over to them, i'd use one of the larger and more "well known" firms...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

given the first post i would say it is either something that the OP has set up or knows the person who is running it and just trying to push knowledge to other people.

that said a tax return isnt difficult its all about knowing the right figures to send, but then i would question how accurate the advice for a complicated case would be.
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Just a thought wouldn't teaching people how to claim SED be a usefull part of a cadetship and surely wouldn't take more than a few hours.
Certainly far more usefull than the afternoon of sex education we had to get.

I think generally people hear about the more well known tax advisors such as seatax or SKtax through colleges and the Nautilus paper.

I'm with you on that point lewis. People are forking out near ?200 for nothing.

It's not that difficult too claim SED once you know how, I think the colleges are failing cadets by not teaching how, as you said it wouldn't take long to teach it, probably like 15 mins.

I don't. I'm fairly certain the colleges are busy trying to teach them some slightly more important and relevant things than how to claim SED and to be honest, I'd rather fork out the ?200 odd quid to a professional who actually knows what they're doing and does it routinely than to try and do it myself, especially considering you're looking at over ?3000 worth of tax back usually...

I'm not sugesting they stop teaching the colregs etc to teach this. But they spend plenty of time teaching stuff that is next to useless. Week spent running round the country side at a christian team building camp, an afternoon on sex education, learning the garbage annex 4 regulations of marpol that expire in less 2 months, the whole ITAS course come to mind. We already do more than one course that cover elements of law and management could be included in this.

If you don't think ?200 is alot of money to me. Are you telling me if you dropped ?200 it wouldn't be worth picking up?

Exactly. I don't know what its like for engineers, but for the deck side at least 50% of lecture time, and with some lecturers it's closer to 100%, could be considered "Dead Time" whereby they teach you something pointless or tell ridiculous stories and pick their nose for half the lesson.

So a 15-30 min lesson on how to complete SED on your own without getting bumped out of ?200 every year for no reason would be a good thing.

Bearing in mind that the ships I worked with can give around ?8,000 - ?15,000 a year tax back with SED, ?200 is not exactly going to break the bank to ensure you get it back is it?

Since when did MARPOL annexe's expire? There are some new additional standards coming in, but that won't change the bare basics.

I'd also like to think that we don't need to teach sex education, but surprisingly we do because there are quite a few biffs out there and I've seen one or two trying to pass off a brief "infection".

Also, the law and management part you do is not really the place to be teaching you how to claim your SED back. If you want to do it on your own, then go ahead, but I would rather pay the ?200 and not have the hassle...
