  • $3bn salvage! (potentially)

The crew of the US explorer ship Sea Hunter has pinpointed the whereabouts of a shipwreck from World War II, which they believe contains $3bn in platinum.

Nice vid explaining how a British freighter Port Nicholson sunk by German u-boat in WWII

Whats the rules regarding salvage? Surely it can't be 'finders keepers', possibly after a certain time frame.
I hope they find what they're looking for anyway, 71t of platinum.

It belongs to the underwriter probably. I'm curious what we wanted with 71t of platinum back then, the insides of electronic valves at a guess? Or possibly oil refining.

just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages
down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for
new vocabulary.' - James Davis Nicoll

The platinum was a payment in kind from the USSR as part of Lend-Lease.

Salvage law is complicated and variable.

They did the same with the "John Barry" that was sailing along carrying a load of Silver....
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....
