Ships sailing under a British flag will be able to carry armed guards to protect them from pirates, the prime minister announces.

About time, although as i've said some charterer's are still dead set against it...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

All posts here represent my own opinion and not that of my employer.

Insurance is the next thing to sort out, then other countries you are visiting need to allow arms on the vessels. Egypt already declared it would not allow armed team to leave/ join in Egypt, South Africa has a rule book that is so HUGE several captains have already been detained for not following the rules. It's a mess to be frank, however getting flag state in-line is a start BUT only a start

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I've sailed on quite a few ships that have been armed in recent years and the Firearms declarations and paperwork are an absolute nightmare. Some countries require them bonded in a steel safe, others have customs take them ashore on arrival and returned to you on departure.
My current employer is the first to send me on some proper training on how to use the firearms supplied.

Not sure that a Glock 9mm is gonna save you against a RPG...

well a couple weeks ago when I was on my Security short course, we where told it is still a very grey area, now with this being passed I think its only going to be a little less grey, as it has been said above yes UK Flagged ships can have arms with trained people to use them but does the law for the waters the ship is in allow for them also. And what was also said was, yes, you can put 2 men on a ship, with so many bullets, what happens when they run out? you have just made the pirates angry! and some ships have been attacked by a number of skiffs with more men and guns etc its a tough area but atleast people are starting to take note and make moves to help the situation.

Don't for one second think it's a couple of hicks in home made canoes that run these piracy networks. They are not going to to be deterred by armed guards. If anything, armed guards are likely to see them adopt a more ruthless approach, they'll simply adapt themselves accordingly. I can see more blood being shed, and even greater demands being asked for.

well we where taught using the correct measures and equipment, I.e Barb wire, water cannons, high speeds, zig zag patterns etc you are more likely to put them off attacking your ship and going off looking for the silly fool who hasn't bothered preparing for them. It doesn't mean they they can't/won't attack you but reduces the chances of it, like anyone stealing anything or robbing anyone they will look for the weak and undefended. as for the pirates, they have got stronger with time, with high speed skiffs but these guys only get $10-15 for taking a ship and that will feed there family for a year.
