  • Cadetship Recruitment Update April 2010

Companies that are still open for applications:

RFA... closed for 2010 (effectively), but 2011 (Nov start at BRNC then) Jan start or (June start at BRNC then) September start most likely (it's a ridiculously long process...)

Carnival... (maybe only for Engine and ETO) ...closing soon

Princess... the website says they are, but who knows!

BP... open for apps until April 29th (new HR man, an experienced Aussie, may be a good 'un!?)

Shell... unknown! (probably closed... the feller seems slightly unaware himself.)

Maersk... reportedly full up for 2010, (apparently they like Portuguese speakers?!)

James Fisher.... recruiting for September 2010 (but PNTL is full... only 2011 considered)

Viking/Chiltern/Trinity/London/Conway... unsure, but seem open for Engine and ETO apps.

Bibby... full for 2010, open for 2011 Jan & Sept starts (helps if you can speak Mandarin, because they sometimes leave a Chinese girl to handle calls.)

SSTG... maybe a few spots left for 2010... unknown (cadets up to the age of 42 taken this year, but Mr Abrahart is evidently "marmite"...)

Clyde... full for 2010 (...which is slighty hard to imagine given how little they pay).

    Anglo-Eastern... unknown

    Pritchard-Gordon... unknown (website down!)

JO Tankers... open for engineers still perhaps... (but oldies not welcome!)

It says on Clyde's Facebook page that they have filled all available places for September 2010 and will reopen for the January 2011 intake in October.

Shell are apparently looking through their applications this week (very late?!)... so if you applied for them, and have had a phone interview, then you may well still get a real interview (what a protracted process!).

Anyone heard back from BP apart from the "You meet the criteria" email?

            Actually no.....I got a similar e-mail.

Basically they left it too long and I accepted another offer.

People will not hang on and hang on if offers come in.

Recruitment processes should be a lot more efficient

I can't help wondering whether BP will bother this year! They're ****ed... what happened to Exxon after the Valdez? Didn't they have to merge with Mobil to survive?!
For this spill to happen in the pit of the worst recession, with the trendiest president, and the most aggressive competition about, seems to me to be a colossal disaster for BP... I reckon it's going to do lasting damage, and that could mean that they rethink their crewing plans... (just my idle guessing, of course! )

BP shipping is too separate from the rest of the company too feel the effects just yet I reckon. And they're still under tonnage tax...

Only to a limited degree as they've only got about 4 ships under the UK flag, everything else is Isle of Man/Bermuda.
I don't think it'll affect the fleet too much, as they're there for the purposes of marine assurance as opposed to being there to actually make money (allegedly cough cough).
As an aside, the Exxon Valdez incident almost finished BP Tankers. Afterwards, BP decided that they'd build no more new ships and that when those ships left in the fleet reached the end of their useful lives and were sold/scrapped, then that would be the end of it.
However, the legal implications regarding corporate responsibility that arose after the damage sustained by the 'Kukri' and specifically the loss of the 'Erika' changed all that.
Back in 89, BP, like Shell, Exxon, Esso (they still had a fleet then) and Mobil all had their company logos on the funnel and in certain cases also used the company name in the ships name. However the press images that were beamed around the world in 89 of a dirty great oil tanker with 'Exxon' emblazoned on the ships side/funnel, whilst throwing heavy black muck everywhere killing some seagulls and fish etc was deemed bad for PR purposes.
After that outcry the companies were then all in a mad rush to rename their ships and remove their corporate logos from the funnels.
Before BP made a final decision to follow suit, every time one of their ships went into US waters they embarked about a dozen American painters onboard. Their sole job onboard was that should the ship have an incident then they'd immediately go up the funnel and paint it black! At the time the BP funnel was red with a black top, with the old BP shield imposed upon it.
Much to the delight of the traditionalists amongst us, BP decided to change their funnel colours and naming structure back to what it had been in the 1920s - it looked far better than the (1960s) corporate image.
