This was of course based on a real event which took place off the West Coast of Australia, with the ship in question being the 'Kikri' - have a look at Google!
She had been chartered by BP, however during the pre charter inspection they hadn't noticed that due to heavy corrosion much of the deck near the bow was held together with cement, canvas and paint. This kind of fix was common enough on BP ships so there was no excuse for missing it, regardless of how well camouflaged it was (we were good at that too!).
Lots of red faces in the Chartering Department over that one, and the Aussies weren't too happy either!
