I was here today and watched a sea survival demo but the participants were school kids. Looked pretty full on and this was only on about stage one of four apparently, going to be mad actually doing it!

remember liferafts are the worst case scenario, you would be more likely to be in an enclosed lifeboat on most modern ships

True true, to be truthful i'm quite looking forward to it. Also, piloting the lifeboats around the Tyne looks like a whole lot of fun!

It was some hard work doing that drill every 30minutes for the day! but as chris said, the chances of you resorting to a liferaft in an abandon ship are extremely slim

Is the platform on the second video where they get winched too where you jump from?

I can't re-watch the video because I'm currently onboard a ship so streaming is blocked However, if you are referring to the platform near the winch then no. A few years ago that would of been the height you jumped from (I would of relished that), but 'elf and safety' considered it too dangerous (its a sea survival course for god sake, of course it should include an element of danger!) Now you jump from a 'step' at the side of the pool which is about a foot and a half high, much to my disappointment

Thats utter madness that you can't jump from the upper platform, when I did my Sea Survival at STC we did that and it was great fun, if a little daunting in the dark.
It is a great fun course, and you'd have to mad not to enjoy it along with the Fire Fighting etc. Also depending on where you work, you may end up with the chance to do these exercises with actual helicopters etc.

Been to Fleetwood a couple of times and you have to jump three meters there. First time I did it fine, however the last time I was ****ting myself. That's the fun in it though right?

If you do get to do them with a real helicopter dont reach up to grab the strop, theres going to be an earth line on the hook thats much better to dunk in the sea first. Although its more common to send down an airman to coordinate everything.
