Yet another death on a lifeboat, damn things kill more seafarers than enything else.

More to that than they are letting on, cables dont just let go for a start, and again why are people working in a semi open lifeboat or over the side and not wearing life jackets?

    So sad.

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Was it the wire that parted or the hooks weren't re-set properly...??? If it's sailing in that part of the world I'd be suprised if their wires (and certificates) weren't up to scratch, our Captain on here is from NZ and was telling me yesterday that the Aussie authorities are **** hot on checking certificates. Saying that, if the wire han't been greased and maintained properly and was nearing the end of it's working life..... I'll be looking out for the report on this one.

The block doesn't appear to be hanging from the other cable - which you would expect if the onload release hooks had failed or not been reset properly - but then the picture isn't particularly brilliant, so I think the wire has probably parted - as unusual as it is!

Shouldn't be long until the dutch / NZ authorities bring out the report.

Sad to hear. Does anybody know what he was i.e. deck officer/cadet/passer by/maintenance? It just says crew.

One thing i don't get is it says "One man managed to use a bucket to stay afloat" could this man not swim? I know he should of probably been wearing a lifejacket but i would of also thought that you're taught how to tread water with gear on. Or is it that the gear is so heavy?

If you ever tried treading water with boots on you get tired very quickly. Only done it in a pool god knows what it's like at sea.

You aren't required to be able to swim to work at sea

Also, unfortunately the "basic safety training" is not the same in every country - some basically get shown a video and issued the certificate for things like fire fighting and pst...

Thought this might be the case.

                  No.

IIRC the Royal Navy require all their recruits learn to swim to a basic standard.

The idea is to keep the wet stuff outside the big metal box, then you don't need to bother swimming.

Are there any online stats for mariner deaths? I strongly suspect lifeboats are almost as deadly as enclosed spaces.

I kinda see the point that really you don't need to swim but it seems strange.

Would also like to look at stats if anyone knows of any.
