  • What would you improve in the engine room if you could

    Hello,

    I was wondering about the engine room and how things could be replaced with more efficient, innovative machinery/systems.

    What would you replace?

    I would replace anything which said Caterpillar on the side.
    Go out, do stuff

        Just waiting to be assigned to the fleet for my first trip as an officer but from my experiences as a cadet I can't think of many things I would change in regards to machinery.

        Perhaps some sort of automatic regulation of the auxiliary engine sump levels. Personal small tablets for every engineer to answer alarms on, look at system diagrams, manuals etc while in engine room. Although they would have to be extremely robust. I'm sure after my first officer trip I will think of a few more things!

              We have this on our PMAX tankers,

              Basically you have a lub oil drain tank which the AE sump tank can over flow to, the lob oil purifier takes suction from the drain tank and fills the sump. Sump tank always 100%

                  The engineers. My car does 1000's of miles a year and is only subjected to a mandated tinkering once a year, and as a result is as steady as a rock, whereas all the ships I've been on have had squillions of engineers making themselves look busy and the whole job is generally falling to bits! Just Saying...

                  (This is oil vs water banter for those who may take this seriously...!)

                  Serious note, as a non-engineer, my overriding feeling is that personnel access is an after thought. We expect you guys to run the job and maintain it, but the yard leave a 30mm gap down the side of one engine...

                    They used to build radio consoles the same way. They'd wire them up from the back using beautifully laid cables that were all too short to remain plugged in if you had to pull a unit out for repair

                        Yeah, access to machinery is definitely a biggie, I have been on ships where you need to remove 3 pumps to be able to maintain one.

                          When the manual helpfully says things like...... Prior to removing the sump first mount the engine in the turning gig and invert the engine...... Rolls Royce and Cummins both say that for there vee engines.

                            As I have transferred to yachts I unfortunately can't agree with this as the choices on yachts are caterpillar or MTU. I hate MTU. At least caterpillars are so unreliable I know what's failed before I even check it.

                            As for changing stuff in my engine room. I'd like to remove the meddling captain I too often find having an inspection.
