Hello all,
I've in the midst of a purifier major service, It's an alfa laval 846 unit for your info.
I don't think the bearings have been removed for the last two 12,00 hour services, I heard noise coming from it ( a lot of noise) so I opened and could feel the bearing was bad while turning it by hand.
For anyone who is familiar with these purifiers, you have to remove a brass fan from the shaft before you can remove the top end bearing, The fan is attached with a left handed thread to the shaft and should only have been tightened by hand. However while trying to remove it I've noticed that A) there were no marks on it what so ever where the special tool should go to remove, this indicated to me that it had never been removed.
while trying to remove the special tool broke, so I welded reinforcement onto it and started to try and hammer the fan off...
IT WILL NOT MOVE!!
I've also tried taking some Freon to cool the shaft and then removing the fan, still no luck.
The only input my 2nd has given me is that I should just put it back after changing the bottom bearing. I've refused as I'm worried it's just going to screw the whole thing up. To be honest his contract is up in 3 days and I don't think he cares. Same applies to the chief.
Can I heat the brass fan with a torch or will this damage it?
Any one got any advice, tricks or experience?
All inputs welcome
