  • Terms used by UK Examiners; how to answer them.

This is always helpful to understand and be reminded of.

    STATE or PROCEDURE
This is a list of answers, or a list of steps.
A procedure MUST be numbered in the order you do it, if you are stating answers I personnelly see no harm in numbering each answer too.

    SKETCH
Do a sketch, draw the diagram in pencil, colour it if you have time at end of exam, annotate the diagram in pen. Title it.

    DESCRIBE
Do a sketch where possible and writing to go with it, or do some writing with a simple sketch with it, to fully describe something, diagrams say a thousand words. If its slow marks, don't take lots of time on sketching, its time management.

    DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN
Do a sketch or write a description, but then explain why each bit is what it is, why its not something else. How it works but more importantly why it works.

    CROSSHEAD ENGINE
    This is a 2-stroke engine.
