  • Engineering EK Wrangle

Hello there I would like an answer to this question. I have gained a HNC in Marine Engineering and passed my oral exam but have failed my EK twice is it possible to do the HND or FD/PD to get around not doing the EK exam and thus gaining the EOOW ticket.

    Thanks in advance guys

Just a heads up, duplicate posts are generally frowned upon.

In answer to your question, afaik, its entirely possible to gain the hnd/fd while still not meeting the MCA EK requirements, so I'm not sure how going for those would be beneficial in your circumstances.

What does the MCA EKs involve? I always thought they were easier then the HND exams, in fact one or two guys from my class failed the HND and did the EKs I thought. But really you should be sending this question to the college or MCA (Anonymously if you wish).

More importantly. Do you know why/where you are failing?

Which ticket are you doing? HNC gave u seconds exemptions only on accademic subject you still do EK's, the HND gave or gives you the same at Chief's

the EK is administered by Scotvec or SQA not sure who these days on behalf of MCA so you pass the EK and the orals as a seperate but combine package for each level.
        Trust me I'm a Chief.

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Can you get the papers back? See where you're going wrong?

              What is IAMI?

budgen91, whats in the EK exam? I seriously suspect the EKs are of similar difficulty.

Have you both been doing Cadetships? Or come through motorman route?

hey. no we are not allowed our papers back so have absolutely no idea where we are going wrong. even appealing is no use and just angers the folk who mark the papers. I'e tried to track down to see if I could see one of my papers but no one can point me in the right direction. I have another resit this coming Friday and I've totally lost all confidence due to failing so often.

What is the format of the EKs now, still split into 3 sections? Is it the questions that are letting you down, or lack of time?

Talk to one of the lecturers, if there is spare question paper in the pack, they can keep one for you, then after you complete the exam, go write down all your answers again from a spare question paper as soon as possible after the exam. That way you will get a good copy of what you put in the exam, which a lecturer can then mark for you. Have you not done any mock exams with lecturers?

That is the only recommendation I can think of.

for me its two papers as I'm not doing steam so it is just motor and general knowledge. I keep passing my GK but failing by 5% max on my motor. I ran out of time the last one coz I panicked and missed a question out, but the times before that it was lack of knowledge as there was a few questions I had never seen or heard about before. As for mock papers I have 26 of them and hae done them all, I hae handed them into lecturers to be marked but theirs so many other students wanting the same I'e never had anything back. Im in total dispaire just now coz I realllly want to pass this

Don't loose confidence, you keep concentrated and positive, you will improve, that is for sure. I'm only sorry there isn't more time before Friday for me to help. Any questions from past mocks your unsure on the answers send me them in a message.

If you are happy with the GK then a little more concentration on the Motor should do it if you were 5 % off last time. It is very important that you finish the exam though (sorry if I am stating the obvious, but below are a few pointers which might help you concentrate and relax during the exam)..

                          - time yourself for each question to allow reading time at the start and rereading time at the end.
                          - don't waffle for 2 pages when 1 page will answer the question.
                          - get diagrams/sketches down roughly first so you can refer to them as you answer the question (neaten them at the end if you have time)
                          - if you are stuck, move on and come back later.
                          - answer the easy questions first to get marks in the bag.
                          - don't fight for the last few points on one question and run out of time, you will probably get more marks answering part of all questions that not having tried all questions.

                          Good Luck

i appreciate the tips for not being a panic merchant lol. i just got confused with the paper as they added the steam and had no heading so i freaked out not knowing the answers then i reliesed the rest of the paper i was doing was on the back of the steam. It was a stupid mistake because I felt fairly confident after reading the paper through when i first got it, eerything just seemed to snowball I could hae kicked myself. You get 10 mins for each question in the motor paper (5 questions) and 10 mins each question in the GK ( 7 QUESTIONS) they are fairly straight forward and before hand I thought i was putting enough info in as each question ( big markers) were a page long. Im frustrated because i cant see where im going wrong so i can improve and they just keep saying i need to write more. Hopefully friday will be the last one I need to sit, Ive done so much prep and study that if I dont know it by now i never will .
