  • TRB - dangerous trends and initial actions

    Hi guys,

Trying to write reports for task 4.2 C03.4 in the TRB, but having a hard time finding info for these:
    - Activation of crankcase oil mist detector
    - High and rising exhaust gas uptake temps
    - High temp in one unit of scavenge space
    - Erratic cylinder exhaust temps

Just wondering if anyone can help or know of anywhere I can find some info?

    Thanks

Engine Manual, C/Eng standing orders (sometimes), SMS (sometimes) and perhaps asking the Engineers on board?

Also, in the event that any of those does happen, normal reaction is: -

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

      Break it down into bits.

What actually causes each alarm? This is usually a good starting point for this kind of thing, because ain't much use trying to fix a problem when you don't know what it is in the first place!

Once you got that bit sussed, your actions in the event of these happening should follow on.

I'll give you a couple of hints on what you are looking for, but as GM rightly says, the info is available on the ship, and learning how and where to find information is quite an important skill as an engineer!!

Crankcase Oil Mist - How is an oil mist created, and why do you think it is so dangerous? What can it lead on to?

Exhaust Gas Uptake temp - firstly, remember this is UPTAKE temp, not cylinder exhaust (I got myself mixed up on this one ). Why would this temp go up, and what would cause it to happen?

Scavange Space Temp - Again, why? What do you think would cause this to happen?

Erratic Exhaust temps - These can go either way, what would cause them to go up, and what would cause them to go down?

All this info is in the MAN B&W manuals if you are sailing with these engines, and I would assume that the other manufacturers will have likewise (I have only sailed with MAN B&W, so can't say for other manufacturers!)

      Cheers, and best of luck,

      Phil

Good stuff, also, try to think what the consequences could be to each alarm going off? Will it cause an auto-shutdown? Will it cause the ME to auto-slowdown? Will it all go bang and damage something/someone? (believe me, if your crankcase goes, it goes with one heck of a bang!)

You also need to think about who needs to be informed in each of these cases and what actions you may need to request from other people.

and this is why TRB needs to b re-written into a more logical and coherent document, it's current format is total cobblers, having tried to guide cadets through it a few times it is in desperate need of a re-grade and sort out
            Trust me I'm a Chief.

Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've asked the engineers on board who don't seem too sure themselves tbh or think differently to some of the stuff in the manual. Just looking for some extra info for my report and I'll show the chief and see what he thinks.

And I agree that the TRB is poorly written..a lot of it is too vague that even the engineers aren't sure whether they should be signing tasks off or not.

              But anyway, thanks again!

I'll give a quick hint here, what is in the manual is what you need to know. Ignore what any engineer might want to tell you, no matter how convincing they seem!! At the end of the day, companies like MAN etc have spent many years and a lot of money designing and building engines, and if they go to the lengths of writing procedures down, it is because they work. If the manual is wrong, and everything goes tits up on a ship, you could guarantee the shipping company would be going right back to the manufacturer demanding compensation! So, they generally try and get the manual right to start of with

Also, there is the fact that your examiner is likely to start getting concerned if you were to tell him that you do x procedure because the manual is wrong

The problem with that is that the manual doesn't always tell you what your initial actions as OOW should be which is what the question in the TRB is looking for.
