I have been offered an engineering officer cadetship with Clyde marine training and a friend has recently told me that it would be better to apply directly to the shipping companies as they pay better. However the deadline for the acceptance for my aplication with CMT is the 1st of May.What should I do??

I think Guinnessman has hit the nail on the head. You are probably too late to submit individual applications as most employers have got down to final selections for this years intake. However it will not harm to have a ring around and see if any are still accepting applications. Only then can you make a decision about whether to have another bite at the cake.
There is also the question about the difference in salaries. I have a general feeling that the lowest is around ?6,000 per annum and the highest is ?11,00 per annum. I know the difference may seem huge, but you will still survive, even if you are on the lowest.
It it worth risking a "bird in the hand"?

Without actually talking numbers, since the change in funding a lot of companies have reduced what they pay their cadets. Clyde are the lower end of the scale (not the worst payers) but generally speaking there's not a lot in it anymore. Don't risk your offer over what's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

The highest cadet starting salary that I am aware of is just shy of ?16,000p/a gross.

Clyde Marine cadets all get ?175/week at college and ?120/weel at sea the only cadets I know that get more with Chevron who get ?100/week bonus from Chevron themselves on top of Clyde's pay but it is rare for Chevron to take on cadets from Glasgow. I would recommend putting down Chevron and Northern Marine for you're choices as Chevron has a ship for cadets and Northern Marine have various ships so you might end up with a steam ticket.

I think as of the September '12 intake Phase 5 cadets no loner get the extra ?20 a week as there's never been any mention of it in any paperwork of mine. They've got rid of the discretionary bonus scheme at the end of each phase as well (again starting from Sept '12.)

Cutting costs I imagine. Lots of cadets, limited places. People will still take it up. I know it wouldn't of bothered me. ?20 per week, per cadet, adds up over all of the Clyde intake. Plus the bonuses are ?2,000 in total (or thereabouts), so that will be a huge chunk of change saved as well. Harsh, but it's not the best economic climate out there.

We were just told it was because of all of the changes in funding, that we all cost a fortune as it was and that was that.

Clyde marine are a joke if a company, although they do offer your a great opportunity to get yourself a good job in a good career. Take it."My Job"
It's not my place to run the boat
the fog horn I can't blow.
It's not my place to say just where
the boat's allowed to go
It's not my right to dock the boat
or even clang the bell
But let the damn thing
start to sink AND SEE WHO CATCHES HELL!
