  • ColReg Rule 36

Sorry to make another of these threads but I can't be sure of this after a google search and I think it could be a good idea to have an answer for this on here.

So, do we all think that when the ColRegs say not to 'embarrrass' any vessel when directing a beam from a searchlight in the direction of danger it means not to direct a searchlight onto another vessel?

    Thanks.

It means do not shine your bloody searchlight at the bridge of the other vessel thus blinding those on watch!

I think I asked the exact same question on here when I was a a cadet. To be fair Alistair why doesn't it just say that

          Because it's written by lawyers...
“...the sea's only gifts are harsh blows and, occasionally, the chance to feel strong. Now, I don't know much about the sea, but I do know that that's the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing blind, deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your own hands and your own head...”

I believe it's less to do with saving blushes and more about not putting the other vessel in a difficult or complicated situation.

In quite a few collision reports you read of indecisive actions embarrassing the other vessel - in less archaic/leagalese lingo, that could be read as complicating or making things more difficult.

In respect to that rule, I think they're after a signal that is unambiguous and one which will not confuse the other vessel, therefore avoiding the above.

I know I'm an dirty engineer, but that rule seemed fairly clear and straight forward to me....

The word 'embarrass' has a specific legal definition of 'to encumber, hamper or impede'

I know that, but I still thought, from the context, it was quite clear...
