  • Intrinsically safe torches - ATEX zone 0 or zone 1?

    Hi

Im looking to buy an instrinsically safe torch for use on deck, I have found that Peli do a nice selection of these torches but they are all categorised into zone 0 or zone 1. All are ATEX classified.
Does anyone know what this means?

    Thanks

Zones are classified by what amount of explosive substance could be inside them.

Zone 0 is an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods
Zone 1 is an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation

There's a Zone 2 as well which is areas in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur.

      As zuluonezero says.

Zone 0 is likely to be the most expensive and would only be required if entering a tank full of explosive gases - somehting I dont think you'll be doing.

Zone 1 would be fine for taking out on deck and using down a gas purged tank. We use the Zone 1 Peli head torches onboard.

We use PELI torches on board, very good and reliable, I also have a one of these in my pocket all the time, very good for on the bridge at night.

If you can't laugh, you shouldn't have joined!!

Thanks very much. So ill be safe with a zone one, excellent. A few of the officers ive worked with have recommended Peli to me, so ill take their advice.
