Well IP - you are correct - but your reasoning is not quite correct!

        Changed my answer again. Overtaking.

Its a trick question as people will answer rule 18 and it will be wrong. RUle 18 doesnt apply to overtaking vessels

Q: You are doing maintenance on the EPIRB and you somehow accidentally set it off, what are your actions?

I know a guy who failed because of this..

Run away and claim it was like that when you got there?

To be honest that is a much better answer than saying ''turn it off''.. The answer which gave someone an automatic fail

I suppose the correct answer is inform the relevant rescue organisation it was an accident, and reset it? Probably tell the captain at some point too, or is it assuming you're the captain?

Yea. The main point is to inform the MRCC for them to pinpoint it and let them turn it off.

Ah right! I get the impression it's largely a common sense test, with a few facts and figures thrown in?

In most cases yes, except for the COLREGS.

Yeah, even though the oral in done in an examining office it is classes as a "practical exam" and they like it when you say things like "on the ship, I done this"

I always wondered about that couldn't it create an absurd situation where an NUC as to keep clear of another ship?
Probably have to call the master then hide in the toilet :P

Someone managed to confuse everyone with this question...

                                Q. You are a PDV in restricted visibility and you hear two SHORT blasts on your stern. What are your actions?

The cadet look puzzled and replied with: Alter 180 degrees to starboard and head towards the sound signal because that vessel is not in restricted visibility!

Not the correct answer, but clever!
