  • Summer cadet

    Good evening, folks!

Just joined oc.com, look forward to contributing to the forum in the future!

I am currently studying Nautical Sciences(BSc) at ?lesund UniversityCollege, and are on the lookout for a spot as summer cadet for summer 2014 and 2015 as well as 8 months after finishing my bachelor degree. Do any of you have any advice for companies hiring summer cadets? I am open for most suggestions, but would like to try cruise, chemtank or tank.

The reason I'm only going to sea during summers, is that Norway have quite a different system on education of maritime officers than "rest of the world". We attend UniCollege without sponsors, and study for a BSc. You can actually go through the entire STCW education without setting your foot onboard a vessel, but you will need 12 months sea time as cadet to get D3(Chief Officer unlimited)

And, while i remember; will have DP Basic, ECDIS, ARPA and IMO60 Safety at time of boarding
    Thanks!
    Best regards,

Welcome along.....odd system you run there :-)

I would try the usual suspects, maersk, Knuteson, seven seas, et al, also take to college, they will know a few things to help

I have been to allesund, well the Langsten ship yard to collect an AHTS for maersk, was a fun filled 5 months
    Trust me I'm a Chief.

Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

      Thanks, Chiefy!
It's quite a different program, but I like it ;-)

I'll look into the companies you mentioned, thanks for advice.

?lesund is a nice city, and 5 months here I understand can be interesting ;-)

          Heisann Ekebergt, hyggelig Fortsatt kadett/skole?

Yeah, i have been in touch with Bergen Tankers. Sadly, the crew manager said they now only accept former A/B Apprentices which had their training onboard their vessels.. Thanks any way, for the advice!

I was also in Alesund, I particularly liked the open air museum with the replica Viking ship.

Hi, I'm from Spain and we have a similar system here, without sponsors or anything. We study for a 4 years BC and we get the Chief Officer license (after 12 months of sea time). After, we need a Master's degree to get the Captain license. Is is Norway the same? I was in Haugesund for an Erasmus last year and sometimes I think why didn't I stay?

I'm starting to look for a cadetship position too, starting in summer. Good luck for both

Norway is almost the same. We study for 3 years, then we have the theory needed for masters license. Afterwards, it's just a matter of getting enough sea time to get your masters license. So no master degree needed, bachelor enough 😄

By the way, nice to hear you have been active in the Erasmus program. Have been so myself, in the Erasmus+/YiA program 😄
