Professional Diploma Phase 3 (Deck)

Well im at my sea phase at the moment but I go back to GCNS in September to start my phase 3 PD in deck.

I just got the syllabus notes for the year in and ... it looks bad . It all seems to be mangement etc etc , no more chartwork , nav maths or anything ? Can some1 who has done phase 3 update me on the script for it by any chance?

My syllabus reads :-

Marine Law and Management
Marine emergency response and communications
Marine Passage Planning ( good some chart work )
Bridge Operations Management
Applied Marine meterologoy
Ship Stability : Therory and Practice
Marine vessel structure and maintenence
Vessel operation mangement
Shipmasters buisness
Shipboard Mangement
Engering systems
Nautical Science graded unit 2/3

... SO MUCH MANAGEMENT?! aaaa .

I believe the general "template" of the FD/PD is to do phase 1/2 operations-focused, phase 3/4 management-focused and then phase 5 as a sort of wrap-up, get short courses done etc etc. That's an uneducated guess though, so maybe some others will be able to shed light on this.

Sounds a lot like what I'm doing at the moment, the management stuff isn't the touchy-feely-are-we-all-getting-along stuff, most of it's talking about the bridge proceedures guide, ISM, ISPS etc etc, so it's all pretty important!!

So when do you do EDH, celestial nav, sailings, gyro/mag compass etc?

We did sailings in the first phase, have just been doing gyro/mag in ENS, celestial starts after the summer break and we did EDH when we did fire-fighting and lifeboats but will do EDH and boats again when we come back for phase 5.

Done all sailings inc Great and composite Great in phase 1 . Also did the gyro/mag stuff in that class 2
Done all celestial in phase 1

We got EDH in november time.
