  • Merchant navy work experience- for secondary school

Hello I'm currently in y10 at secondary school and we have recently been sent out letters about work experience and we have to pick very soon what we wanna do so we can apply. I found out about this industry a few months ago and I'm very fascinated by it so I think one weeks work experience would be perfect to see whether its all its cracked up to be haha.

My question is to those of you who know something about where I can find opportunities for a week's trip on a boat or whatever. Anything related to maritime. I've looked online and can't find anything... So if anyone knows anything about where I can find a link or if there's anywhere I should look that would mean a lot.

Just realised this was posted in the deck category.. Idk how that happened ha

    Hi Brendan,

I tried for y12 work ex, but got rejected due to insurance and safety. If you know someone who can take you on the bridge unofficially, that may help.

    Otherwise I think you're scuppered :/

Princess cruises have offered work experience before I believe, think I read it somewhere.

Do you know anyone at all in this industry? Start through them.

If not, I would suggest going onto the careersatsea website and finding cadet sponsoring companies there, then contacting them.

I would also say that due to your age ferry or cruise companies as they may be more accommodating, but you never know... get some shipping company details and try a phone call.

Whereabouts in the country are you, is there a local ferry/ tug company? It might be worth chasing it up that way.

Also if you can't find a ship to take you for a week, why not try a harbour authority or harbour VTS (vessel traffic service)or even the Coastguard? Also if you were really keen, asides from doing your mandatory school experience, there's nothing wrong with asking for a week or two during the holidays from a company either?

Just noticed.. you want to go engine side, well could always try for experience in a dry dock or with a company like rolls royce or wartsila if you're struggling to get on a ship....

Yeah it sounds like this could be more or less impossible. Ah well. I was just being optimistic haha I don't mind doing something else non-sea related which is relevant to my engineering.

Sadly I don't know anyone in the shipping industry. My whole family is in the catering industry... So yeah :/

However, I am going on a cruise with my grandma via princess cruises next April, could there be a chance if I asked them that they'd let me do something to count towards my work experience? This is probably overly complicated and unlikely but, hey, what have I got to lose by asking right? I'm going for 4 weeks and perhaps that could show me around the engine rooms or something... Idk. Haha.

Where are you based? If close enough, it may be worth calling and asking a local shipyard? (If it's Barrow, you're scuppered there)
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Haha. In the Brighton area. 5 minutes from the coast to be exact.. Not sure about the work there. Mostly I see speedboats whizzing around and the occasional kitesurfer, but no large ships.

Maybe a marina or boat yard, or boat dealership. Its not shipping but its closer than tescos.

Is there not a ferry terminal near there?

Just had a look on google. I'd suggest getting in touch with Brighton Marina as you could do your experience in the marina or the boat yard which would be good experience if you're wanting to do the engineering aspect.

Might be a bit of a travel, but try getting in touch with Babcock Marine, they do a lot of work in Portsmouth dockyard, or I know BAE Do a good work experience system as I did it myself!

All very good ideas guys! Helpful suggestions... I'll get in touch with Brighton marina and see if there's any chance they can offer me some work experience. If not, I'll try that Portsmouth idea. Long drive but I suppose I could always try crashing at a cheap hotel nearby for the week.

Someone asked about whether there's ferries from Brighton. Nope I've never seen one around here and even if there was I have little to no interest in ferries haha

Your nearest ferry port would be Newhaven, to your east but didnt the newhaven-dieppe service end??

If Brighton marina doesnt work out, there is some marine industry of sorts at shoreham harbour, littlehampton and chichester marina.

I would say that most of the advice here seems to point out, try everything and be prepared to expand your horizons beyond your initial goal.

Not impossible, I'm sure you'll find something if you put the groundwork in. Good luck anyway.
