  • Lights confusion.

    I've been going through the rules and am a bit confused by rule 24. Specifically 24ai, 24ci and 24d. It seems to me like 24d contradicts the other two. Please could someone enlighten me as to how they are meant to be interpreted? Thanks in advance

    Unfortunately I can't paste them in as my rules app copies a bit funny...

    Ok.. I don't really see what is contradicting about it but anyway;

    Rule 24d simply states that in complying with 24A or 24C the vessel must also comply with 23A(ii); that is if the vessel is greater than 50m in length (and one less than 50m in length may do so) it shall exhibit a second masthead light abaft and above the forward mast head light (which in this instance will have been replaced with the towing lights)

      Thanks.

      So why does 24ai say "instead of the light prescribed inRule 23(a)(i) or (a)(ii), two masthead lights in a vertical line"? Could it not have missed out the bit about 23aii?

        Give it a few years and it'll become clearer

        http://portfolio.wuthering-heights.c...rpcslights.htm Have a play with this, it'll maybe make things a bit clearer for you, but honestly, don't get too bogged down with the rules just yet

            Why is a vessel towing lower down in the priority list than a normal power driven vessel?

              Its not only the red buttons relate to rule 18.

                Keep in mind a vessel engaged in towing is treated as a normal power driven vessel unless she is showing RAM lights etc, You just need to be extra caution when determining risk of collision with it.
