  • Navigational equipment for college

I know this has been done before, and recentley but I cannot find it through a search. So apologies for wasting peoples time.

I start at Fleetwood in September and have been told to buy a pair of 15" ruleers, Dividers, compasses adn 2b pencils.

Where is a goodsource for these, how much should I expect to pay? Is this list comprehensive enough or does anyone recommend something else?

Also to any other RFA's can we get these as issue from anywhere like navy stores and can we claim these back form our college equipment expenses?

Cheers in advane for the help guys and girls.

You can use rules but I prefer using Triangles, faster and less slipping, then again you are with RFA so probably better learn to use rules. Lots of nautical shops online where you can buy them and save some pennies.

There is no official naval stationary issue available. You can occasionally 'borrow' things from a ship if the Navigator has some spare, but that is unlikely for relatively high-value items like these unless you have the luck to be on a ship that is decommissioning, and that will not be an option until your first sea phase. You can claim the cost of chartwork instruments back as part of the ?200 stationary/books allowance.

Your chances of using paper charts at sea are rapidly diminishing as the fleet goes paperless, but if you do you will use rolling rules. At college I used a cheap set like this bought from an art shop. Adequate for most college tasks and notably faster than Capt. Field's pattern.
