  • Settle an argument: gyro error

Simplest thing ever but we're all a bit foggy headed.

Your gyro error is 1 low.

    You want to make 045T.

    Assume no tide or leeway.

    Course to steer gyro?

Well on the basis if you took a bearing of a star and it was 044 true, and your gyro said 043... your gyro error is 1 degree low

    Hence 044

This is so simple it is confusing, I have done Magnetic Compass Error, but not gyro yet.

We were told to remember: Gyro high steer high – Gyro low steer low

So I would imagine the course to steer would be 044? (T).

I would need someone with more experience to confirm this.

Although we all know in reality we just adjust the heading until the COG = what we want

on a bit of a tangent, the ETO class at STC got to go in the bridge simulator yesterday to see how the electronic systems connect up with each other, and I was stood right next to a gyro error correction panel.

                046G

If the Gyro is low, you need to steer high to compensate.

                  046G translates to 047T.

Wrong way round. The other ship always crashes into you.

                        Think of it this way:

If you're real heading is 045T and your gyro is reading 1 low, then your gyro will be reading 044G

So if you are steering 044G your real heading will be 045T, so if your gyro is reading low then you steer low.
                        Go out, do stuff
