Now this'll be a bit Deckie, so apologies to Engineers (1st time I've ever said that!) could any current cadets give me a bit of a steer in regard to content of the Deck Cadet course? Other than the Nav,RoR and ship stability side of things? I'll admit to being rather ignorant of Maritime law and the like. All offers gratefully received.

Re: Academics
Maritime law... ugh. We've only had a few lesson so far, it's boring, covers things like the basics of how the law system works, contracts, jurastiction over the seas and er, stuff we've not done yet. Take a pillow.
You'll also do meteorology, cargo work and ship construction, nav aids (not the good kind of aids), management, signals, professional development. errrr, can't think of any more off the top of my head. Are you doing the HND/C or the FD? The FD covers all theory up to mates, but the HND/C only takes it up to OOW, so if you're doing that you might not do management, the stability won't be as complicated, and I'm not sure if the HNDs do law either...

Re: Academics
I'll be doing the FD, but not all of it. Just have to do the modules I don't already have. Very long and dull story, but basically it should boil down to the maritime law and cargo type stuff. Though it would amuse me greatly to be told I need to do Navigation!

Re: Academics
Ah splendid, when shall we see you there? I hate to tell you that you'll probably have to do the whole course, if you know it already you'll breeze through it and be able to help your classmates. I was in a similar sort of position in the first year, having spent 7 months on a tall ship, I knew how to do a course to steer and and eta.. hadn't done great circles though, so I concentrated on that, they all thought I was reeeally clever! Now, they've all kinda caught up with me and I really ouught to be studying more, but this site's so much more interesting!! Oh we've not started celestial nav yet, but that's another thing on the course...

Re: Academics
I'll be there in September, I'm getting positive noises from a lecturer up there regarding accreditation which is good, help's that the Grey Funnel line have finally sorted out their academic side of things. Celestial nav, ah what fun. I had a great time doing my astro ticket. Though I'm sure I'm about to get told I didn't learn to do it properly

My mate is starting to teach at Fleetwood soon... that ought to be funTrust me I'm a Chief.

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Re: Academics
What you say is very true Steve, however due to everyone getting piled on to small ship's these days for OOW training the voyages aren't long enough for the sites. So I jumped on one of the Point's run by Foreland shipping to do mine and had the pleasure of a proper Merchant Officer teaching me how to do it properly. Also had the added bonus of opening my eyes to the colour of the grass on the other side.

Question is, did you do all the calculations 'hand-o-matic', or were you taught to do it via NAVPAC?
We often carry RN SLT in order for them to gain deep sea time for their Astro Nav ticket, indeed we had 3 onboard only last trip. From what they told us ,all they'd had was an hour or so of basic theory at BRNC, whereupon they were shown NAVPAC and told to go forth and work out the rest for themselves (complete with book).
After doing a few weeks onboard, the Old Man signed their chits up and off they went again. From what I understand this is a requirement before they can sit for their OOW ticket, and I would presume they'd cover the subject in some depth when up for FNO etc?
Edit: Just seen that Steve beat me to it!
