There is or was some sort of prize of monetary value given to the cadet on each phase at GCNS who has shown the greatest improvement in college work. Just went to the smartest ****er in my phase, he hadn't improved, he started out getting 100% in most of the exams and just carried on in the same vein.

Aye I've recent experience of that sort of thing... alas, in the world of academia you should always go for whatever will get you the highest mark on paper, because then you can allude to being that good at everything else; the same works in reverse.
I would hope and expect that in the offshore and maritime world, that reputation and genuine competence counts for a lot more than marks on paper on a given day (beyond meeting the basic papery requirements), and that blaggers get exposed rapidly.
