  • Accommodation internet

I am wondering if anyone can shed any details of what the internet is like in our rooms. Whats the bandwidth like? Is it possible to use P2P (torrents), what restrictions are there.

    Thanks for any details :-)

I think there is aload of info on their site about this; probably under the accomodation bit.

We will probably be under the same rules as every other uni student. I would put money on not being able to use torrents, and they will probably get you to sign their acceptable use policy.

I'm sure it mentioned it in there somewhere, and as most torrents are big and 'illegal', then I would guess not; but I'll have a trawl of their site now.

                    Re: Accommodation internet

In practice you probably won't be monitored; but any unusually large download activity may eventually arouse curiosity.

Traffic Shaping Systems may be implemented to block encrypted torrents and private trackers, but they may not be that up on things.
I doubt anyone would be going out of their way to monitor downloads, but they will probably have the ability to if they wanted to - but it's a full time job - traffic limiting and mediocre network performance for study bedrooms is the lazy way to make it not worth the effort.

Standard Bittorrent ports (6881 or 6882) would probably be blocked, so you would need encryption on both ends and use private trackers. A public tracker will get spotted easily (as campus networks are linked with JANET), and you would get busted pretty quickly.
e.g.: throttling it down to quite slow speeds (a few hundred Kilobits/second) with no queue, then the odd bit hear or there probably won't draw attention.
However, they can identify your room (socket) by the IP address, and even if they didn't get issued with a Take Down Notice (on your behalf), you probably would be in for a minor disciplinary, and a possible mention to your sponsor. I would treat it like pr0n - is it really worth the hassle?

On a lighter note, I'd be interested in hearing what the rooms are like for space - I'm contemplating bringing an old desktop down with me as my laptop is a bit old, and I want to use Skype videophone and Iplayer etc... without so much frame drag.

                      Re: Accommodation internet

Haha righto, I think I'll be able to cope without pirating for the duration, as you say; not worth the hassle.

In terms of room sizes, the one we went into on the open day had a reasonable desk length, along the wall upto the door, so probably about 9 feet.-very rough guess as I can't really remember- But it was quite deep enough to put the computer on without issue. You would haveto discuss with your room mate though about possibly encroaching on his side if you're doing paperwork aswell. But I'm sure you'd be able to do that, even if on the bed or something!

Yeh, you could fit one in either in a corner or under the desk surface, but it would depend on where the plugs are: I'd imagine ontop of the desk
