I was just wondering if there were any clubs or societies at Warsash? There wasn't anything mentioned at the open day but surely there is a football club or something on the same lines?!

    Thanks

    Re: Clubs

I know they have a lot of water based things, kayaks, dinghies, RYA stuff. Not too sure about land based things (I am the least sporty person ever created so don't particularly care one way or another). But I'm sure you will have plenty of support. So get a group together when you get there, then ask the support staff. They'd be more than pleased I'm sure.

...I thought you meant discotheques full of no-tails...

A bit of sport and exercise would be good.

        Re: Clubs

WMA students have access to all of the usual clubs and sports available through the Student Union. As the academic year is different to the main campus, some students have found it hard to fully participate in some of the sports teams, and so some local WMA teams have been formed for some sports. We try (but can't promise) to timetable you with Wednesday afternoons clear for sports and SU activites (in line with most other universities).

As others have said, there is no shortage of marine based activities - the University watersports centre is on site, and if you have the appropriate certification (which can be obtained at WMA through the watersport centre courses) you can borrow the University equipment for a wide range of marine-related sports and activities.

...so you could have some fun getting RYA certificates and getting wet?

There is a webpage on the WMA site about this:
          http://www.solent.ac.uk/sport/waterspor ... _Home.aspx

Not cheap though, is it! Still, I could be persuaded to have a go driving a powerboat

So out of interest... how many of those courses would actually be covered by what you do as a cadet?

            Re: Clubs

The courses aren't cheap, but they are offered to students at a rate substantially below the general public rate, and it's generally a lot cheaper than other local commercial sailing schools.

There's not a direct overlap between the RYA courses and the cadet courses, but obviously some of the basic theory is similar - however as a cadet you'll study at a higher level, and learn all about the sort of kit that you wouldn't find on many yachts!

Thanks for your help! I do enjoy watersports and I used to sail. Maybe we could get a 5-a-side team together to play in a local league or something, that would be awesome
