  • Should I bring my Xbox 360?

I'm starting in September, and wondering wether I should bring my Xbox. Are there enough there (I saw a Wii in the communal area on the open day)? Or do they have policies regarding this?

Up to you... if you do make sure it's insured and make sure I'm your new best friend :-D

Haha! maybe, I'll think about it. I'll have to look at the insurance bit, as I doubt Warsash will think about covering it, if they let it in at all. But yes I've a fair few games that may liven up the tedium between drunken brawls and lectures.

Shouldn't be an issue to be honest, but would have to be in your room with your own tv I think.

            Marvellous, that should be great.
I also heard you have to buy a license, but from what I saw of the accomodation there is no aerial plug in. Possibly their crafty way of making extra cash?
Not that any of this matters, as clearly all of our time will be spent studying.

No aerial plug in but you still technically need a tv license because you can plug in a set of rabbit ears or a coat hanger! Bit mad really when you're only there a few months at a time.

I thought that they had gone digital?? How embarrising if Southampton is behind deepest darkest West Dorset! I may just keep quiet and if they mention it I'll just move the box into the TV that was in the communal area.

You only need a TV licence for receiving a live (or nearly live) TV signal by any means (when physically in the UK).
You don't need one just to be able to receive it (that would be like "pre-crime" in Minority Report) - it's a stupid anachronistic law, and easy to undermine now we've got the internet.

I am an expert on this subject... you should see my bellowing letters to the TVL Company, and their quivering replies.

You can have a TV in your room and use the Ex-Box on it; it's perfectly legal, and they have no right to inspect it without blah blah blah (ask me if you really need to know).

The college will have it's own licence for it's communal sets.
If there's no aerial socket in your room, then they have no reasonable grounds for making you pay for one [cue Officer Cadet Union Rep...]

...if you're really bothered, you can buy an old Phillips/Commodore monitor on eBay for ?30.

OK, clearly when they wrote that they would charge a lisence fee, it was when things were analogue. I have my own TV so all should be splendid. And besides, I'm sure there will be plenty of other stuff to do.
BTW do cadets have their own Union? Just the way you wrote that it sounds like they are their own body.

No there is no "NU>MN<S"... but I think this site is effectively a casual "Union of Cadets".

or perhaps "N.U.M.B.N.U.T.S." ("National Union of Maritime Boat-Nerd Undergraduate Trainee Sailors")?!

Certainly if there was demand (and numbers), we could have a poll on it, but for now, it's just blather

HAha. Righto, might not be too impressive with the sponsors if we start campaigning for cadet rights. :/

If you are serious Nautilus does have a cadet section and needs active members, setting up a new Union is fraught with difficulties, use the one that is ther and vote people on to the board / council etc that represent you (ie yourselves)
