  • Warsash Open Day 27/6/14

I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone around here is going to the open day at Warsash College on the 27th June?

Will be my first opportunity to speak to some recruiters and cadets in person, I must say I'm rather excited!

Also, anyone with previous open day experience, is it a suit and tie sort of event? Or can I be a little more casual?

I'll be going along...for the umpteenth time Not a suit and tie event. Have seen people in all sorts, from tracksuits to suits. Go in whatever you feel comfortable in, though I would personally go for something a little smarter than tracksuit bottoms etc. If it's really warm, though, I will have to go in shorts.

Take a look at this discussion about what to wear http://www.officercadet.com/showthre...rsash+open+day
Remember there will be people who just go along who have no intention of a career at sea but it means a day out of school.
look at rootseas post too in that thread.

Look at hatchorders post on cv's if you haven't already and get some printed off to hand out.
Suit? Well as you are likely to meet recruiters, what impression do you want to make? Someone who is trying to make a good impression and is serious about this career, or do you want to look like someone from school on a jolly?
Shirt tie and smart trousers and shiny shoes at a minimum, standing out for the right reasons amongst your peers is better than for the wrong ones.
      Enjoy yourselves!

Went the first time dressed casually, everyone else was suited up, so got the suit out for the second time around, and I was one of very few! Personally, if I was going to talk to company representatives and in the process of applying, I'd take the suit option

Thanks for the advice folks, I'll either go for the full suit, or shirt and trousers at any rate.

I should have added I've already got sponsors and I am going in order to meet up with fellow September intake people. I probably won't even go inside the recruiter halls, hence my casual choice. Definitely be smart (and know what you're talking about) if you're going hoping to get sponsorship.

Thanks Wjm989, I will go dressed smart. I'm in year 12 at the moment so I'll be looking to start a cadetship in 2015, do you think its worth taking CVs along even though it isn't this year I want to apply for?

Sure, take them along just in case. Be prepared for them to seem quite brutal though...so many people go to these things and there are so few spaces.

From what I can remember companies start recruiting for the next year Jan 15 and Sept 15 fairly soon. Once they have this years in take sorted out they start organising for next. As for sponsors being brutal, I don't recall my son coming back from them saying so, he had some interesting chats with recruiters and found out lots of information whilst he was there.
Take cvs you have nothing to lose by doing so and if anyone asks you have it there and then.
Take a look at hatchorders tips on CV's he also lists on another thread, which companies are recruiting for Jan 15 who has finished for this year and who only have a Sept intake, so you could target those companies first as it can get very busy at these events.
Though it does seem quite a long way away, in reality once you have summer holidays, Christmas comes round pretty quick and there were people being interviewed quite early on for this year. Many had completed and selected by April / May if you take a look at hatchorders list.

My daughter took covering letters and CV's to the open day at Fleetwood, and talked to a few of the companies. A few days later had a phonecall from Trinity House, after a long chat there was the offer on an interview in London a few weeks later. She was offered a cadetship after her interview and is about to finish at Warsash in 2 weeks.
So yes, I would dress smart, take letters and CV's, you never know who is watching!

Definitely dress smart, but don't go buying anything too expensive, just wear what you have. CVs never hurt. Talk to as many companies and cadets as you can.

You have the right attitude. I think that one girl on these forums mentioned that she will be going, so you won't be the only girl there.
