  • Warsash accommodation fees/ cadet pay 2017

The rumour mill rumours that the accommodation provided will be more expensive than the current accommodation and also non-catered, leaving us (at the current sponsorship rate) very little money to eat/have fun etc with. Does anyone have any idea about what the accommodation fees will be at the new City College campus, or who best to ask or even when the info is likely to become available.

Well the standard Solent uni accommodation costs can be found here. They are no worse than students at Plymouth pay and some are cheaper. The one thing I'd be concerned about is length of contract as cadets do not normally spend 40 weeks on campus in an academic year. However, perhaps they will have separate accommodation for you all.

Consider yourself lucky you're not stuck with thousands of pounds of debt after a degree!

I think part of the deal was separate accomdation for cadets. So parhaps costs etc will be build round the cadet phases etc

This is a direct quote from senior staff at Solent and is supposedly correct at the time of writing:

"It has recently been confirmed that from September 2017 Maritime Students will be accommodated in the “David Moxon” halls of residence which are located in the centre of Southampton( SO14 1XA). Details of the accommodation can be found on the Solent website at:

The David Moxon Annex, which contains 117 single rooms with en-suite facilities, there are shared kitchens with 1 between 6/8 students. Accommodation will be entirely self-catered however there is a canteen facility available on the new campus facility ( and this will be available for cadet use. The accommodation block will be for the exclusive use of WMA cadets with priority given to Phase 1. Given the current state of recruitment it is likely that there will be a substantial number of rooms available for returning Phase 3 and 5 students. It is expected that if there is over demand for WMA students wishing to go into University accommodation then space will be found in other university blocks however this will not be exclusively WMA students. Details of the other accommodation can be found on the website. The costs shown on the website for the accommodation are for the current year; it is anticipated that for Sept 2017 these will rise in line with inflation. WMA cadets will be charged based on the weekly figure reflecting the duration of their course at The Academy.

The David Moxon accommodation is situated less than 5 minutes walk from the new WMA Campus which is situated on the current City College campus : ( postcode S014 1AR. WMA will be taking over the “Austen” building shown on the campus map with a separate entrance off Chapel Street.

Now that the precise location of future cadet accommodation has been finalised (as of last week) it is intended that staff from the University Accommodation office will be in contact with current students who might be looking for accommodation in subsequent phases in the very near future in order to identify requirements and gauge demand."
