  • Starting South Tyneside in September. General questions?

Hello there, I have recently found out I am off to South Tyneside college to do me engine Cadetship. I went on an open day in January to Warsash in Southampton and some of the cadets told me most of the colleges are the same. I just had a few questions to ask for the people that have been there or currently studying.

    - What are the rooms like? I am going for the non catered en suite room as I have heard the allowance for food is not quite enough for 3 good meals. I just wanted to know what are in the rooms and how much space there is. Pictures would be appreciated?

    - What is the college like? I have read the reports and people are saying its a great college. I wanted to know some of the facilities it has

    - Are the engine cadets and deck cadets together? I just wanted to know as it would be nice to socialise with all the cadets

    - What things should I bring? I am moving here so I wanted to know some of the items to bring such as laptop and equipment that would be helpful for me

Thanks for your time and hope to meet some cadets on here

Awesome stuff! I'm starting September too, only on the Deck side of things.

Most of the stuff I wanted to know, as well as useful extras, were pretty much answered and directed accordingly in a thread I started not too long ago- check it out! http://www.officercadet.com/showthre...eral-questions

    Rooms:

From what I can gather, and from what I've been told by a few chappies I'm working with just now, en-suite non-catered (ES-NC, therein) is the way forward. Considering it's the cheapest out of the lot, and its generally 'cleaner' and less of a hassle (rather than using communal toilets and showers... eugh). From the photos in the above thread, fairly decent. Enough space and with the added bonus of all the ES-NC rooms being 'upgraded' and 'updated'

    College life:
Again, I've not experienced it- yet. However it's quite the blast. There's a pretty good union on the go- not to sure about student union club/bar e.t.c. Facilities wise, with opting for ES-NC you get free membership to the gym (updated too- I think), there's plenty of communal sitting areas with TV/Pool/Ping-Pong/X-box and I think Netflix (Top Tip: 'Netflix and Chill' in a communal sitting area is not advised ). Considering also, can hop on a quick Metro into the centre of Newcastle... and the world is your Oyster, as it were!.

    Integration:

As far as I can tell, I'd imagine in the accommodation everyone is pretty well mixed- with DC's, EC's and ETOC's. As for classes- some of the standard classes likes of sea-survival/firefighting and first aid will be mixed with everyone- however the Department-specific classes you'd likely just be with your fellow EC's

    Bringing to College/Accommodation:
Thankfully with the much-needed upgrades to the ES-NC rooms, you also get free 'WI-FI' with ethernet-cable ports in your room available too. I wouldn't hold your money to it being top-notch ultimate quality WI-FI, but it will do the job.
As for what to actually bring- some standardised stuff I've got (Made a spreadsheet for packing/inventory)
    'Critical'
    • Clothes
    • Cadet uniform pieces
    • Bag(s)- e.g rucksack/day-pack.
    • Computer (PC or Laptop)
    • Stationary
    • Books/Magazines (if that's your thing- I've got a fair collection to keep me occupied).
    • Personal folder e.g All cadetship colleration, finances, certificates e.t.c (I'm just an organised sod- but having all personal documents on hand is ideal).
    • Shoes/Boots and Polishing kit (Again, this is something I've got down)
    • Torch/Tools (For an aspiring deckie having some mini-tools on hand is helpful)
    • Bedding material (STC offers a bedding 'pack'- but you're better off getting it independantly)

    'Non-Critical'
    • Photos (Family/Friends- again, nice to add a personal touch/decoration.
    • Whiteboard/File-Shelves- again, nice and organised and can keep track.
    • Personal kit/hobby stuff (I've got some airsoft kit put down, as well as model-making kit- just to pass the time/keep occupied)
    • Extra coat-hangers, iron? Ironing board? (Question-marked because apparently the college have these in the communal areas- however I would bet they're used all the time Can't iron in your room- apparently- however in the communal area- fair game!)

That's what I've got so far- you're absolutely welcome to drop me a message/reply to this thread. Best bet is use this thread as you get a contribution from everyone else!

    Stay awesome!

the en suite rooms are ok, i think the difference in price for catered only equates to the amount on the card they give you anyway. Youll likely need something to buy a pan or an oven dish or something. When i first moved in after it was done out there wasnt too much but they i suppose now theres probably been bits an pieces left behind for that sorta thing. Bring whatever you need to make the place feel homely.

You wont be with the deckies for any classes or courses, but you will for sure see them in halls and your weekly trip to g'ball.

Best not to. That'd ruin it. You'll know it soon.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Look up glitterball south shields on FB. You'll inevitably end up there. Got to love the the way your feet stick to the carpet and well...that light up dance floor.
