  • The Gym

I've not had the chance to check out the facilities at STC.

My thing is powerlifting, i want to be able to continue this when at college (i understand when at sea the facilities will be more limited) so is the gym at college up to much or should i find a gym local to join?

To be honest i need a good squat rack, an olympic bar and 270kg+ of olympic plates. I assume it will have decent cardio gear so that aint so much of a concern!

    Any info appreciated

The gym in the halls will be no good for you. The equipments not that good. I dont think there is a squat rack and probably not even 270kg in plates.
There is a gym near the college which is cheapish (about ?20 a month), its not the best and is quiet small but there will probably be enough weight in their for you (student discount too with your card). There is a Golds gym in town (20 minutes walk) which is probably the best one for you, i've been in a few times and its a good gym with good equipment and the manager is a powerlifter too.

Excellent. The Gold's sounds like the place i want to be then. I can handle ropey old equiptment but as i train for strength, i need fair weight.

I'll look into the local gyms right away, thanks alot

Just had a look there. Ian Morgan's Powerhouse gym is a 30min walk away according to google, that looks perfect!

Going to hang off till i've started college but there seems to be plenty choice if indeed the college gym isn't upto much.

Thats the one which used to be Golds gym (thought the name had changed). It is the best gym in shields unless you want use of a pool, jacuuzi and steam room then you need to go to springs which is ?35 a month.

I share your head pain... (as do a few other users on here above the >6ft2 concussion free zone) and being of a similar, if slightly less "muscle based" weight, i too can imagine issues in getting through doors. The sideways ducking twist is going to become an artform...

...isn't that the rest of the bulkhead... with the door having a little bit of overhang and the ability to seal against water?
