Is it true that STC aren't taking any Scottish Cadets this year due to funding issues? I'll be devastated if it is! ha

Sounds like a lot of rubbish to me, funding comes from Support For Maritime Training (SMarT) which is available to all UK residents.

a member on here contacted his sponsor asking if it was possible to change colleges to STC and they said no and this was the reason they gave

I don't think this is true, i don't see how your nationality would effect your funding!

Doesn't have anything to do with nationality, it is to do with being a resident of the UK.

I am very skeptical of this, but I could be wrong!

I meant nationality as in scottish/welsh lol, i'm not sure if thats the correct term but yes, as long as you are a resident of the united kingdom, i dont see why this would be a problem!

That would probably be a false reason. If they were to change from an Scottish college to an English college then they would have to restart the course as the academics won't be the same. Different exam boards, different requirements, etc...

It could be case. Remember eduction (and hence funding) is a devolved issue and I know that the SG provide more funding than England these days - so it could be that Scots studying in Scotland have cheaper college fees than if they were at English colleges, last face it any company wants a good deal!

Well both of us were hoping for STC and we're both going to Fleetwood! But ohwell, its definitely not going to stop me getting stuck in and enjoying myself!

Your most likely better of at fleetwood , Going to STC myself i can tell you that the college is abit of a shambles now due to poor management and most of the good staff retiring early as they cant be arsed with the new management excess workloads.

However due to the colleges policy of having to pay all staff the same ie Hair and beauty the same as a lecturer in maths who has a PHD !!!, they can't attract any new staff since a Chief engineer would earn ?70k-120k plus a year in industry but get a pesky ?30k being a lecturer in a college.

Being from the fleetwood area myself , and knowing staff and Students at the college , i can assure you it is alot better ran and also has better staff student relations. As STC is a general college staff public Banter is limited , any way have fun at fleetwood i know the engineering department is new but if its as good as the deck side it will be exceptional .

Anywho, the figures you're quoting for a lecturer at STC may be correct, however when you do go shoreside you take a massive drop in pay. Im working with Technical Superintendents who get about maybe 10K more than that.

Also, having been through the system, I'm firmly of the opinion that whilst former Chief Engineers are the best for teaching Marine Engineering related subjects (such as Diesel Engines, Auxiliary systems, etc) unless they've done a teacher training course they shouldn't really be teaching the academics stuff (like maths or thermo-dynamics) because the vast majority that i've come across don't remember it and barely used it during their professional careers. Even basic work-shop skills, I've come across numerous Chief Engineers who are completely unable to use a lathe or a pillar drill (sad I know).

When it comes to paying lecturers all the same, I'm on board with that. Regardless of the subject you're teaching, from a works point of view you are both at the same professional designation or level. I'm sure the hairdresser can make a lot more money off running her own Salon than teaching the lot that they teach as well.

Running a college is not an easy task under the best of circumstances, and I would be rather surprised if a whole raft of lecturers are resigning simply because of that, especially in this job market as they would have a very hard time getting a Superintendent or Sea-Going position again, simply because they haven't or haven't done it for a while and it's not the easiest job in the world.

For Kirsty, as you're going in as a deck cadet then Fleetwood is probably one of the best places for you to go as that is what they're geared up towards and they have a lot of good staff. It's not like the Engineering side of things, most of what you learn there you will use whilst on Ship. We have a lot of Academics and I will admit, since I started working I have never sat down and used Dynamics or Mechanics knowledge. Get your head down, don't go getting pissed all the time and you'll do fine there.

So for my STC bashing , just most people in my class have finally had enough of all the crap and are getting rather peed of the college to say the least.

Right, instead of moaning on here, where no one can or has the inclination to do anything about it, why not go into your student support office and ask them what the complaints procedure is. All places of study and work have one, get enough of you together and make some rational complaints. If you follow their procedures for doing it then they are duty bound to respond to you. Better yet, why not do that and make a lot of noise to your Company Training Officer! Marine college's have to respond to them as they're the ones with the cash!
